I am doing my best to wait out a refresh. My 2004 dual core G5 is not supported by Apple or third party software anymore and I need CS5 badly for my late model dslr..

What are the odds of a Mac Pro refresh with Lion this summer? I can't see the sense in buying a current config when 2 x thunderbolt and 4 gigs are standard with the new 27" iMacs.. but I have no interest in a glosssy screen. I already have my ips panels. So it's a mini or a pro for me.. which will come first? :D

Perhaps you'd consider a used machine - a 2008 octo would be a nice upgrade. You could then wait for the pending models in relative comfort.

Not gonna happen.. if anything, middle of 2012 the way Apple has been ignoring the MP.

There won't be a Mac Pro update until Q4 2011, as the required CPUs to update it (Since Apple uses Xeon parts to support Dual CPUs etc), won't be available until then, so the chances of the update before then are a pretty safe 0.

both MP sold out online

Both MP models are now sold out online at BB - either poor inventory controls or there's a change coming...

single proc Xeon SB

Yes, but these are single processor Xeon Sandy Bridge - not the ones Apple will use in the MP

bb = Best Buy. Well known reseller. Generally good reputation.

No, they are NOT a good reputable reseller, at least the one near me which discriminates against people with disabilities and other ailments. I prefer to call them "Worst Buy". Maybe yours is good, but mine is terrible.

Source? I call Mid 2012 possibly, just possibly March the latest 2012. All point to 2012, but the way Apple treats the MP it could be even longer.. Laptops and others will come first as the mac pro is a NICHE market based product.

You should read NanoFrog's comments on that.. then you would know.

You have interesting requirements such that either a Mini or a MP would work for you.

Considering the cost difference, if they are both suitable, I'd certainly get the mini and save a ton of money.

Amazon is discounting their current MPs.

I am looking forward to an upgrade and think it will happen in the next month or two.

There will most likely be an update this year, who knows when, only Apple. I would suggest buying a used newer mini or a refurb. Then sell it once the new Mac Pros come out and buy a New Mac Pro. that way you dont lose out on using a newer Mac in the mean time.

I appreciate all your responses, valuable info to consider..

My new dslr does do hd video, hence I am considering the MP even though as of yet I've done nothing mentionable with the feature. Strictly still photog and I have a feeling that the new mini will be more than adequate- unless I delve into video processing and editing. I don't expect anything as small as the mini to keep a real on par graphics card inside. With the expandability of the Mac Pro I'm leaning towards that one but definitely won't be waiting until Q4! A gently used newer mac could work interim, but once CS5.5 is registered to one machine, I will not have another user license for the new MP in fall.. what to do what to do.. hope for a refresh soon.

I had a G4 mini and it was great for my CS2 purposes other than the tiny hdd. And it only supported one video output. The G5 dual core has spoiled me for drive space and two monitor support.

Just thinking out loud here, sorry:p I think there are signs that some changes are coming soon but without hearing of genius or supplier rumors probably not soon enough! So tired of using dng converter to process raw files. It's Adobe's fault- they don't support updating new ACR into older versions of Photoshop anymore.

Otherwise my G5 could run another three or four years before replacement. It will make a nice file server anyways with two new 2TB seagates..;)

a refresh would drop the 2010 base 2.8 quad down in price. if it went low enough it would be a nice piece of gear for you. one for 1750 usd and after a year do a hex core upgrade. just thinking.

Omg!

You people obviously don't know a damn thing.. Nano already specified that the server based sandy bridge xeons won't be out until maybe Q1 2012 or Q2 2012.. Mac Pro refresh possibly, if we are lucky.. around March - full documentation and threads are on his.. LOOK IT UP!
