Does anybody have experience with refreshed MacBooks? How do they compare to refurbished? Refreshed simply means the computer was returned and Apple repackaged it, correct? Would I find a higher probability for a dead/stuck pixels (possible reason for the return...)?

The reason I ask: I may be purchasing a refreshed MacBook from my Apple Store tomorrow. Price is $1156 for the mid-range white C2D model.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your help!

A few members have purchased refreshed Macs and they turned out to be brand new. Are you eligible for educ. discount? It is only $45 more than the refreshed price...but if not the refreshed price is pretty good.

Brand New > Refreshed > Refurbished is how I think though many swear by refurbished Macs.

I am a student, but only in high school thus making me ineligible for an education discount.

crap policy, but oh well.

could you provide a link for these "refreshed" ones. I have only ever seen refurbished ones.

No link available. I called up my store and asked if they had any refreshed or refurbished MacBooks; they had some refreshed.

Prices:
$989 Combo
$1169 mid-White
$1350 Black

thanks. I think if your opting refreshed you might as well go for a refurbished, if the price is cheaper. Also, find a friend in college or with a sibling in college and take advantage of their EDU discount.

Yeah, I was figuring the extra $69 as the fee for having it now and not having to wait until the next time the mid-white shows up in the refurb store.

A night of sleep had me wondering why there is the $69 difference between refurbished and refreshed...

Thoughts? Any chance I could barter the price down to refurb price?

Well with refurbs, they check the entire thing over. With refreshed laptops, they're just opened and returned, but I'm not sure if anybody checks it like they do with refurbs.

In some ways, I'd rather have a "recent" model refurb than a refresh. Or am I completely insane.

I can't explain the $69 difference in price difference between the two, either.

I might be going out to get it soon. Aside from the $69 difference in price, is there any reason not to purchase a refresh?

I'm with abstract. I also think the refurbed get a better look over then the refreshed. Refurbished means there was a documented problem that warrented that computer to be repaired. Refreshed means someone did not like it for some reason and returned probably with the 10% restock, but that reason could of been a problem, like a display problem thats considered "within normal parameters" to Apple but unacceptalble to the rest of the world.

I hope that makes sense.

Yeah, that had crossed my mind as-well; a return because of dead pixels or something.

plus it might have fingerprints all over the screen. I know someone who returned theres for an update version of the Macbook, the one she was swapping had fingerprints on the screen and I said you should at least clean that off, but she didnt care.

I'm a very indecisive buyer, so when I was faced with the prospect of purchasing the refresh today, I decided to just wait and order the refurb. The $69 I save can go towards iLife '07 when it's released.

Is the refurb store updated on a certain day or is it random?

At first I thought it was scheduled but now I want to say random? The past week I noticed it updated Tuesday morning, Saturday morning. Maybe one more day but I wasn't paying attention.

Week before I believe they restocked on a Wednesday morning.

Well that's what the refurb page may say. Most likely you will get 512MB but you may also be lucky enough to get 1GB :)

The black MacBook looks nicer but I don't have enough $ for the C2D, I would consider getting the CD. $999 for the black Core Duo plus another $120ish to upgrade the MacBook to 1GB (2 x 512 from Datamem) If I do that, the only difference between the CD black MB and C2D white is the processer, correct? Also I wouldn't get the draft N wireless, not a huge deal but it would be nice to have.

Which would you recommend? I like classic white, but black is growing on me.

Also the new C2Ds have dual-layer capability. But yeah, that's the main difference. The C2D White 2.0 MB was 1099 refurbished. So the difference is only $100, +512MB and DL SD from the black CD.

I know its tough. I was in the same dilemma. I went for the white cause I had money issues too. But now that I do (almost) have enough, I'm going for black (to match my setup). Yes, you can laugh at me...

Thanks for your help!

I returned a macbook mid bcause it had a dead pixel ,and then i returned the next one because the apple installer scrathed it up when installing ram and now the next one has a stuck pixel, so and they were all brand new i think...but i'm am thinking to just ask them to discount this one for me or or exchange it. what do you think? just look for ding or deep scrathes ..the ding probably means they droped it....and you dont want it if it droped!
