Looking for a new iPad for my wife so we can pass her old Air onto our son

In the UK, the latest M1 Air is £569 new but only has 64GB storage. You can get a Pro 2nd Gen 11 with 128GB storage for about the same price.

I am thinking the Pro would be the better choice as she’s not going to notice the processor difference anyway and on the Air the cost difference between 64GB and 256GB is too much.

Does this seem like the better choice or is the Air still worth it over a 2nd Gen Pro even with the limited storage?

Thanks

If your wife really needs the extra storage, then the Pro may be the better option, but just bare in mind it is second hand, and that the Air 5 is more powerful in every metric and will get longer support.

Maybe a 256 GB Ipad 9 instead?

what is the Storage of her old Ipad Air? And what does she normally do with it.

If your wife's old ipad is at 64gb or lower then she will most likely still be happy with 64GB.

I would say go with the Ipad Air 5 .. because getting her an used ipad is not a good talk between the ladies.

The 2020 Pro 11 is probably Apple certified refurbished (which are pretty much as good as new). My mom would happily use certified refurb if it saves cash (granted, she often just gets my hand-me-downs).

Pro all the way. Going to look like brand new, and have the same warranty. Really zero reason to get the Air if the price is the same.

If it's Apple certified refurbished it's basically new (new battery, new screen, new external case) so it should not be called used/second-hand. Anything else is generally used / second-hand.

My parents are like that too and I also give them easy to use Hand-me downs. Even myself I do not mine saving money getting used items. I do shop around and can normally get good prices. My iPad 11 pro is a used item, but the price was very good. $650 for ipad 11 pro M1 256gb.

now if its a Gift, and that we are spending the same amount anyways, I would just go with the new. His wife will be happy even if its used/ refurbished etc. . But her friends,,,,,, ladies like to compare,, new item with new color is always a better talk than older item with just as good or better specs in some areas.

Gift, yes, new with the fancy box is better.

For immediate family deciding a household purchase, I feel like it’s less important. I mean, once you take the iPad out of the box and start using it, they’re all the same. It’s not like there’s a huge sign on it saying “HEY, I’M USED/REFURBISHED!!!” anyway.

I also don’t have female acquaintances who bother comparing iPads. Cars, jewelries and Chanel and Louis Vuitton handbags, yes. Electronics however are more for function than aesthetics. I’m still shocked that a single LV handbag could buy 4x 12.9” iPad Pros.

Definitely go for the refurbished iPad Pro, the extra storage & FaceID are worth it.

If it’s a refurb from the Apple store then it’s not even a choice IMO. I don’t think I’ll ever buy a new product from Apple unless it’s some groundbreaking hardware. The M1 chip doesn’t even do much for iPads, no battery life savings and minimal performance gains (less than 20% vs prior years).

Those LV handbags prices are no joke. ????

Thanks all, I think the 2020 Pro is the way to go.

No doubt the latest M1 Air outperforms is in terms of the generic 'Geekbench' scores banded about on the Youtube channels but in reality, I can't see 99% of people noticing the difference in day to day use so the processor difference is of no real concern.

It would be a refurb from Apple so essentially new anyway.

There’s arguments for both. The biggest appeal of the Air 5 is its superior 8GB RAM. Although I would have gone for the 2020 Pro in your situation, yes only 6GB RAM but ProMotion and extra storage makes it worth it.

At least in the US, we occasionally get some pretty good deals so I’d rather pony up some extra cash for the 2021 Pro.

2022 Air 5 64GB wifi: $569

2020 Pro 11 128GB wifi: $609

2021 Pro 11 128GB wifi: $699
