All iPads Refurb 9.7 Ipad Pro vs Current Ipad 10.2

Hi,
Getting one of these for my daughter. She will be doing little more than videos, games and starting to do some low level creativity and functionality tasks.

I can see the ipad 9.7 Pro for £370 on Apple Refurb store. The regular Ipad 10.2 is at £300. Close enough of a price difference for me to consider. I will buy a keyboard with it but initially no pencil. Being pink is a big win for the pro!

I know the Pro is smaller and a bit older, but it was originally a higher spec thing. I've seen conflicting reports about the processing power between the two. With some saying the older Pro is quicker, some saying the new 10.2 Ipad is quicker.

New to Ipads so looking some advice.

I can see some similar threads, but they have involved newer Pros and older Ipads!

I have a 9.7 pro and love it. In fact, it has replaced my laptop. I have not touched my laptop since I got it. I did not get a keyboard or pencil yet, but I am considering it. I got one for my boyfriend as well and he is just as happy with his, and also do not use his laptop.

iPad 10.2 has 3GB RAM vs 2GB RAM on iPad Pro 9.7 so I'm inclined to go with the newer and cheaper iPad.

Right now, iPadOS/iOS is already at the point where 2GB RAM is still quite serviceable but more RAM is ideal. They perform fairly similarly but you get fewer app and tab reloads on the 10.2.

The Pro 9.7 does still have some features that the basic iPad is missing though: quad speakers, better back camera with flash, TrueTone, etc.

Mind, I'm really enjoying having $50-60 Logitech Crayon support (Apple Pencil alternative using same technology) on the newer iPads (2018+). Lost the Lightning charger adapter for the AP1 and charging via iPad port is pretty awkward. Also love that the Crayon can be seamlessly used in a multiple iPad and/or Crayon scenario. No futzing around with pairing. Installed a tempered glass screen protector on the 10.2 and now the tapping noise is on par with laminated display iPads.

You don't say if they have the same specs, but while I am a big fan of the 9.7 pro (I have 2 of them and use them regularly despite also having a 10.5 pro), I am also convinced that the 10.2 has more value over the pro, unless you really value speakers (I do, but I think for most people it's not that important). As rui no onna said, the additional RAM already makes a difference and may make even more in the future....
For me the main advantages of the pro is speakers (by far) and the lighter body. The disadvantage is less RAM so more reloads (speed will be the same) and smaller screen (trade-off of a lighter body).
Please note that Apple does not sell the 9.7 keyboard anymore, so you'll either have to buy it used, or will have to use the 10.5/10.2 one with it (which works fine, but won't fit perfectly as a cover, since it's larger).
The 10.5 keyboard is better for typing. Having said that my favorite ipad pro keyboard is the 9.7 create from logitech, which works only with the 9.7 pro and is really great.

I went through the same decision just last week before buying an iPad for a family member. I ultimately chose the 7th generation iPad, because of the A10 chip (Saying that like its a good thing ) and the extra GB of RAM. The used 9.7 Pros are getting relatively cheap on eBay and similar sites, but amazon was having a good sale on the 128GB iPad.

IMO, it’s a 50/50 decision but all depends on what specs you prefer and what she will be doing with the iPad, more than what you specified. I think the A9X and the A10 are very close in terms of performance. Basically several things that the 9.7 Pro has over the 10.2 are the laminated display, speakers, better camera with flash and True Tone and the decrease in weight... also the rose gold color that you have interest in. But the 10.2 has the extra gig of RAM.

Rose Gold was my favorite as well and disappointed they eliminated the option.

2 gb of RAM and an older SoC. Go for the newest without any doubt. It will be supported for a longer period.

10.2 ipad will be more future proof with the newer soc (which is already getting old) and the extra ram. Plus the larger screen is always helpful for creative tasks

I think that the mini 5 is preferable. It has a much better screen than the 10.2, has 3 gig of RAM, and has the A12 processor, which should give the purchase much more longevity.

iPad mini is the perfect size for a kid. It is much easier to hold, and lighter too.

The creativity and functionality tasks was what steers me away from recommending a mini. I would be going for an air for what he’s saying his would be using it for

just bought my kids airs for Christmas to be more future proof, used for school and my one daughter loves drawing
