Both for $1700. 4GB of ram, 1TB hard drive. The main difference is the GPU.

Help me decide.

Basic tasks: iTunes, Chrome surfing, Lightroom 3, Photoshop CS5.

Advanced tasks: encoding DVD rips. Not necessary for me to have them done in 30 minutes though.

On my Mac, I literally don't have many apps installed. Only:

Chrome
Lightroom 3
Photoshop CS5
VLC
Handbrake
iPhoto
iMovie
iTunes

Seriously, that's all the apps I would have installed on there (other than the native OS X apps).

I would wait for another 1-2 months before they release the refurbished model of new i5. The 1699 dollars price tag for old imac i5 has been around for months. Why would anyone wait this long to buy now? Either apple can drop the price more or you go for newer one.

You're right. I'll wait for the new i5's to show up in refurb. October is a good time frame.
