Three questions here:

1) If you've gotten a refurb MacBook from Apple, can you tell me the condition of the item you received? I'm thinking of getting a white 2 GHz Core Duo at $849.

2) In that same machine I will upgrade ram to 2G (from OWC) and I want to upgrade the HD as well. I prefer 7200 RPM if they aren't too loud and don't intro too much vibration. Will settle for 5400 if the 7200s are too loud or vibrate. Any experience about the 7200 drives in the MacBook?

3) Finally, my store sells Toshiba, Seagate and Hitachi HD upgrades for the MacBook. Which would you choose and why? Has anyone seen good Mac-based comparison reviews of these drives?

Many thanks to all--

1. Flawless.

2. Never had a problem with my 5400 RPM. Can't comment on 7200 RPM in a Macbook.

3. I usually prefer Western Digital.

Thanks. I have now ordered the refurb MacBook 2.0GHz Dual Core. It has the SuperDrive. I've also ordered 2G of ram (two sticks) from OWC.

Will probably go with 5400 and 160 or 200G on the drive.

Thanks for your reply--

I order a BlackBook a couple of weeks ago and mine was quite scratched, not very clean and had a well worn trackpad. I sent it back because I wasn't happy with it. This is the "Refurb Lottery" and unfortunately I lost :(

Ordered a new one instead.

Oops! Boy I hate to hear that.

Is the return process the same as on the new ones, i.e., 14 days, 10% restock fee?

The one I ordered is a Dual Core (not Core 2 Duo) so I assume it's rather old, relatively speaking. I was wondering if that also suggested it had failed seriously in the field rather than been returned because someone didn't want it.

Refurb lottery indeed. Well, I guess I'll know Wed or Thurs. I'm now wondering about the wisdom of buying refurb to save a few dollars.
