Refurb MacBook Pro or New MacBook Pro?

Hi all,

I'm purchasing my macbook pro this weekend (so excited) and I called up my local CompUSA (no apple stores in Greenville SC) to see if they had any stock, and just with my luck the lady replied "No, the only 15 inch macbook pro in stock is the display model."

So my only 3 choices are

1.) Order NEW from Comp USA (next-day shipping ... it would be here by Tuesday)

2.) Order NEW from Apple (not sure about how long it takes for shipping from there)

3.) Order REFURBED from Apple for only $2199 (not sure how long it takes for shipping from there)

If I get refurbed, am I guaranteed to not have awful 1/3 yellowing or backlight bleed? Since in essence, refurbished products are basically better than "new" products because they've gone through more testing and more kinks/errors/bugs have been worked out.

Any help is much appreciated!!
 
Oh by the way ... I'm only 17 years old so the cheaper price would probably satisfy me more than anything! Haha. Not to mention I just bought an iPod touch yesterday:cool:
 
Get the refurb MBP. You're right, they're good as new.

Apple ships refurbished products from California. So expect getting it in a week from ordering if you choose free shipping.
 
Get the Referb

Yeah you should defiantly get the referb, not only does it cost less but it is the same thing. I got my MBP referb from the Apple store and I have had no problems with it (I have had it for about 6 months).

Do they have next-day shipping for refurbed products?

Hmm, maybe I'm missing something but oddly enough I do not see that option. I went all the way to the part where it asks for my credit card info and it never gave me the option of changing from the free 3 - 5 day shipping.
 
Get the refurb, and just to be sure, save up so that in a couple months you can get AppleCare. This way you're good for 3 years.

You'll see the options after you enter your cc info.
Definitely get the applecare for your mbp.
 
With all the rumors of updates next month, I'm not sure if I'd buy it unless I needed it right now.
 
Buy when you need it.

You can drive yourself crazy waiting for upgrades to come out. I bought my iMac in February and even though the new Aluminum babies are cool I don't feel outdated or cheated at all. Plus I have had a blast getting to know my first Mac.:apple:

I thought about that too, but it's gotten to the point where I NEED one now. And from what I'm hearing, there won't be that much of an "upgrade." Maybe a new chipset in January and a larger HD or something, but nothing major. And if so ... oh well haha. With apple products, they're only guaranteed to be "new" for a year anyhow. They're always coming out with new/refreshed products. Look at the iPod. Those things are obsolete within 6 months to a year.

And then again, they might not even come out with anything. So you never know with Steve and co.

Yes, these are all rumors and must be taken with a grain of salt. If you really need it now, get it. I just got my MacBook and I love it, and will still love it after this update ... hopefully.

It's not an update I'd worry about; it's a complete redesign that you may miss, combined with Leopard. Do you really NEED it? What are you typing to us on right now?
 
I just got a refurb Macbook Pro from Apple. The 15" LED model for $1699. I inspected it pretty carefully. No scratches on the case, just some smudges. Two hairline scratches on the screen (only visible from the right angle) probably from someone using the wrong type of cleaning cloth. A couple of aberrations in the LCD--looks like dirt or something stuck in the screen. No dead pixels. Shipped with the old (big) adapter and an ilife 08 DVD that said something about the CPU on the cover so it wasn't retail. Looked OK, but unlike the iphones and ipods which are really cosmetically perfect there were some signs of use on this Macbook Pro. It's going back Monday but only because the rumors of the ultra portable have convinced me that waiting another month is a good idea.
 
It Shipped!

Wow, Apple is FAST! I just ordered the thing this morning at 6:30 AM EST before I went to school, and now I get home at 5:00 and get an e-mail saying that it SHIPPED and will be here by Friday!! I am sooo excited! I'll let you guys know if it's as "good as new" as it should be . . .
