Refurb MBP 1.83ghz - risky?

I'm planning on getting an MBP this week, and assuming there is no Merom update, I'm looking at the 1.83ghz refurb models Apple is selling. They no longer sell a 1.83 new - 2.0ghz is the bottom of the line. I'm comfortable with refurb products in general, and I'm getting Applecare just in case.

However, should I be worried that a 1.83ghz will have an earlier revision of the logic board, or other components that would make it more likely that I'd have the problems (whine, moo, etc.) that some MBP owners have had? I think I'm safe in assuming that the battery will not explode, but these other issues worry me a little more than they would with a new MBP. Still, it's hard to justify more than $200 extra for a new model, even at student prices.

Anyone have any thoughts?

No. These machines are thoroughly tested before sale and any problems are fixed. And in the extremely unlikely event that something is wrong with the computer, the warranty will cover it.

if it helps any i bought the same system new from amazon, i got it about three/four weeks ago (they had a large stock of the model for less than the refurb price) and the system has been relativley problem free, it does get hot but after you download the smc firmware update its run alot cooler in my case a 15 to 30 degree difference. my MBP does whine a little but not enoguh to annoy me to the point of getting the logic board fixed.

Thanks for the info, that helps a lot. I checked the store, and as of now, they are out of the 1.83 model, but I'll still lean towards a refurb.

Buy it new from amazon perhaps. rebate +no sales tax = cheaper than Apple.

Also, moviecutter in the for sale forum is selling the machine you are looking for 1500 shipped. Its under a year old, so you are still eligible for Applecare.

Is $1400 for a 1.83 MBP a good deal? My local Comp USA has a manager's special on remaining stock.

I've purchased a couple of products from the refurbished section on Apple.com and was very pleased with the quality.

As others have stated, these items would go through quality control that is perhaps a bit more attentive than that at the original factory. It's a good deal, plus you get the 1 year warranty and have the ability to add AppleCare later.
