Are all iMac (Aluminum) refurbs being sold on apple.com used or new? Does it matter? Are they just trying to get rid of inventory or are the majority of these refurbs returns from customers? I'm looking at getting another iMac and don't really see the need to buy the newer model. The discount on the refurbs is really making me lean towards getting one. Does anyone know which is better? I mainly use my iMac for school, iWork, iLife, web, email.

Refurb is Great
A few of my good friends swear by Apple's refurbished products. First off the price breaks are insanely great (note that I am pressing my fingers together and wearing a black turtleneck with jeans and sneakers); look at the ACDs, around 60% off retail. Secondly you could say that they will be more reliable as Apple has DOUBLE checked the hardware. The refurbished products include the limited warranties that the new ones have, and you can still buy AppleCare protection for the same price ($169 for 3 years on iMacs). The only downside to buying refurb is the product lines are usually at least 3 months old. But if that's not a major concern, then by all means, go refurb.
I've been saving up for the Refurbished iMac 24-inch 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme w/ 500GB storage w/ 2GB RAM. It dropped $200 this morning, adding to the initial $500 refurb savings. That's $700 off yesterdays list price!
For that savings you could buy a refurb 23" cinema display... gives you more desktop space, while allowing you to enjoy the vividness of the glossy display and check color accuracy on the matte ACD.
Wait... supplies are limited, and I haven't ordered mine yet. In that case, I take it all back. Refurb sucks.
