Refurbieshed Macs experiencies. Yellow tint? Scratches?

Hi.

I'm thinking about getting a 27 inch iMac, a refurbished one.

What can you tell me about refurbs?

Yello tint? Scratches? What about Magic Mouse and Keyboard?

Do you have some pictures of the machine and the box?

I have returned two 27" i7 iMacs within the last two weeks. First had a blemish in the middle of the screen under the glass. The second had a vertical yellow column on the right side. After the second problem I requested and received a refund. Will try again with a new system following the refresh. Seems it could be soon...

Real shame, because otherwise the computers were fantastic. I wouldn't have even cared about the refresh if the screens had been even close to perfect.

I ordered 4 brand new i7s and all of them have yellow screens, or scratches, or HD failures, or any combination of the aforementioned. Most people wont have bad luck like this, but the point is, even the brand new ones have problems so there's not much use in worrying about referbs. I say go with the referb, because it probably will have the yellowing that the new ones have, but it will be checked better before it leaves the store than any of the new ones, and probably prone to fewer problems, because all of these imac problems seem to boil down to lack of quality control, which seems to be better on the refurbs.

I have had my 27'' i7 reburb for almost 2 weeks. Except for some minor backlight bleed and slightly noisy HDD, the machine is perfect. I do have a Seagate HDD, most Seagate drives are fairly loud especially when crunching on data. However, even with the noise, no errors or hiccups from the HDD, if it fails I will just call AppleCare.

Bought a refurb i7 a few weeks ago, and mine came in absolutely mint condition. No scratches, no yellow tint, the imac itself came in it's protective plastic coating, and both the mouse and keyboard came sealed as well.

You'd have to be an idiot to buy a full price imac if there is a refurb on offer.

Received a refurbished i5 a few weeks back.

Can't really fault it. Very happy.

To me it seems a refurb. reduces the chance of getting a duff product because it is probably one that has been returned to get that problem fixed!

Maybe I was just lucky, who knows.

My Refurb

My 21.5" 4670HD refurb came today.

It was in an im-mac-ulate condition, with the exception of possible yellowing near the bottom of the screen (yet to get a second opinion, but it doesn't really bother me), a speck of dust beneath the glass, and a rather annoying leaking backlight, but I can't be bothered RMA'ing it, and plus it can be only seen on a black background.

I would definitely suggest getting refurbs, saving alot of money, which could be put towards AppleCare, accessories etc. Theres no risk either, as you still get the standard warranty.

No scratches on front panel at all. I found out with the serial no, that my refurb was made in March of this year, so refurbs are quite new, and the only thing that gave it away (that it was refurbished) was the minor scratches by the ports on the back.

I got a 27" c2d iMac refurb. It's got yellow =(.
Just haven't found time to return it.

I purchased a refurb 27" i7 this spring.

The first unit had hardware defects -- the fans cycled and ran so loud I thought the thing was going to lift off the table.

I called Apple, they ran me through a couple tests, confirmed it was a hardware defect, and gave me the info to ship it directly back to Apple.

Within 24 hours another refurb 27" was on my door.

The ONLY difference I have been able to find in the refurbs is the BOX they come in. Sometimes, you even get lucky, and you receive a machine with increased RAM or a greater capacity hard drive than you thought you were getting.

And -- the refurb units come with the EXACT SAME warranty, replacement, service, support of the brand new units.

I happened to outside when thit was being delivered and I was about to say to the delivery guy becareful with that as he merrily crossed the street...the strap on the case broke and .........he dropped it !!!!...luckily only from carrying height and he semi caught it......still....those plastic handles on those boxes are wimpy...BAD IDEA!!.

The ONLY difference is the box. Which is a plain white box with no labels on it (good IMO. No one will want to steal it if it sits on someones doorstep for a bit).

You will never find a single mark on a refurb unit. Apple replaces every body panel on a computer along with whatever was broken and then re-sells it as a refurbished. I'd actually feel safer buying a refurb than a new one singe it has a problem as new, it was sent back, it was fixed, then made to look brand new, then rechecked 3 times, then resold for hundreds less! It's perfect!

Getting into the iMac fray with a 27" i5 refurb, which should be coming tomorrow. Hope everything is great with it
