Needless to say, the machine was running a bit slow. It had never been cleaned, was running the original 5400 drive, and had only 2gb of ram. It was purchased with two and he was going to upgrade himself but it is not very easy to work on this machine and it never happened.
Anyway, we pulled it apart. Blew out all the dust with a compressor and upgraded it to 8gb or ram and a ssd. Fresh install of Yosemite and the machine is incredibly faster compared to before. It's definitely usable and was running everything like a champ. Between the ram and an ssd it's well worth the investment if you are thinking about it. It's also good to clean them out after 3-5 years. It was pretty dirty inside.
