I was about to pull the trigger in the 09 i7 through the refurbished store for $1699 when I started adding up the potential discounts you get through the Education Store:

New i7 2079
8gb Touch -170
nx420 printer -49

total $1860 approximately

For $160 more bucks after you sell off the stuff they give you free it now seems like a no brainer to go with the new i7...thoughts?

I am getting an i7 refurb just because I don't qualify for an education discount but I will get a free printer. That is the only reason why I am going that direction. I guess it depends what the updated video card is worth to you as I don't think the bump in processor is negligible.

Wait, how do u get a free printer? I think I was in too much of rush to read anything when I bought my refurb i7 :(

honestly they were giving a $100 rebate if you bought a printer with your mac you still have to buy the printer but do the rebate online and get the printer

I am in the same boat, trying to figure out which one of the two to get. Part of me doesn't want to be bothered with trying to sell the iPod and printer and might just go with the Refurb.

Might not be exactly ethical. But just return the ipod to walmart w/out a reciept. They will give you a giftcard. Just use that to buy groceries the next time to offset the cost. Heh

Is 160$'s plus Tax (which I didn't see added) really worth a speed bump of .13Ghz per core, Ram that you probalby won't notice any difference with, and a gpu that while it has higher memory shows the same or even lower performance the the one in the i7. Why not save the money and get a nice external HD to go with it.

Yea you have to pay tax on the iMac, ipod and printer. Then you get some money back later for the ipod and printer. I did all the maths and although I really wanted a new ipod I decided to get the refurb i7. Ordered it yesterday :D

is that possible? will walmart even take it since the iPod did not even come from their store? i mean i thought that they scan their barcodes and they have their special barcodes or something....;/ hmm if this is possible then i'd rather just use the gift card to buy a prepaid visa, which is 3 $ and the still have 197$ on the pre paid visa, after that i would just make a payment on the imac itself haha!

yea is that really possible? Has anyone done it? It sounds better than selling it on ebay..

I did the exact same thing. I'm a grad student but we have a 10% sales tax here in Birmingham, AL !!!! YIKES, so when I was looking at the new i7 at some 2059 I think it was there's an addition 205 in tax not to mention the tax on the iPod and the other. It was just crazy, so I said screw this and got the 1699 refurb and couldnt' be happier, it's super snappy, very pretty, and as I don't game and could care less about the minor bumps in RAM/GPU/CPU/SD card it was just a better deal. :)

Amazon

Would Amazon carry refurb models by chance?

Is there a way to get the refurb iMac without tax? Amazon normally does not charge tax on items.

Also, if I wait until September to order, would I still be able to get an i7 for $1700?

I ordered mine today hopefully will get in a couple of days in prepared for shipment I have already moved stuff for preperation. I did get a printer for $100 off could not pass that up as my printer is having problems. Yeah I could not justify the $300-500 for better video card myself, this will be my first refurbished mac so we will see. I do little gaming if any mostly iphoto, dvd, etc. I am going to buy my applecare from ebay quite a bit less than the apple store. I am going to buy 8gb ram as well from owc $228 I believe I am hoping to put 8gb or 12 gb in it if it will run it.

I forgot I could get the printer with the refurb unit. Assuming I would be able to sell the iPod and printer, that would put the difference between the refurb vs new at $250 when taking tax into consideration. I am really leaning more towards the refurb and just using the "extra" money for an external HDD or additional memory.

yeah I have decided to spend the extra money and upgrade to 16gb ram in it from owc they seem to have the best prices for the refurb i7. I am excited looks like it will arrive on wednesday.

If , somehow , a refurb model comes with little yellow screen and/or noises... can I ask the money refund during the next 14days after receiving it?

absolutely same warranty as new, apple will send you a return label so keep the boxes it comes in and send back. If you are not completely satisfied (there is a problem with it) you can do the same within 14 days just like the new ones now if you decide you do not like it they do charge a restocking fee 10% to send back as well just like the new ones.

If you're interested in direct comparison of benchmark-results, take a look at the chart in this thread.

If you can get the education discount AND back-to-school, this is the better choice (as long as you can spend the increased money) regarding the performance you get for your money.
