Am I correct in thinking that my iPhone 3GS is refurbished if the serial number starts with a 5K?

Depends when you bought it. The serial tells what week it was made.

Bought my refurb a month ago.

According to the serial # my device was made in the 39th week of 2009.

When I bought mine in knew I wad buying s refurb.

Glad I did cause since mine was made in the 39th week it was able to be jailbroken.

I didn't buy it my origional iPhone broke so I was given a replacement. I am assuming it's a refurb I just wanted to check. What number in the serial number says what week it is made?

Where did you buy it?

I got mine from Best Buys and have their iPhone insurance,

My serial # is 87939NX93NQ

The 39 denotes 39 week, the 9 in front of 39 means 2009.
