I second the Best Buy open box deals -- they drop the OB prices by a lot when they run even just modest sales on the "new" units. It's really the only way to get a mac for a helluva good price. I paid $1807 for my 1tb 14 M3 Pro 12 core CPU just by getting lucky (it was OB-excellent--and truly excellent)--but the deal lasted only a day. This is LESS than a refurb M2 Pro 14 in. 1tb at the Apple store--and almost $600 less than Apple sells them for new.
The catch is that you'll need luck--and time. I checked out 2 OB "excellent" models that were anything but--one had a dent on the bottom (huh?) and the other had a deep gash on the top of the lid. It's clear not every store even looks at them before stamping "excellent." I'm sure they're no worse than other retailers, but if I hadn't been tenacious and the prices just so darn low, I could easily have given up. Also, to answer brgjoe's question -- I did look at a 15" MBA in "fair" condition which was actually immaculate. It was only "fair" because it didn't have the magsafe charging cable. Amazingly, the store offered to give me one if I bought it.
If you have a microcenter nearby, check them out too. They are still running their holiday 10% off on all macs deal.
