Refurbished MBP Problem

I just got my "new" refurbished MBP today and everything is perfect on it except the area just above the latch. It is bulging out a little and I'm afraid it may get worse over time. Do you think I should try returning it and getting another refurb? Would it be possible to get it repaired at the Apple store?

I really don't want to send my laptop back. I'm about to leave the country for 4 weeks and am afraid I won't have a new laptop in time if I have to send this one back. What do you guys think?

I think that it is normal because when they refurbish the mac books they replace the top deck and outer casing to make them look like new. The replacements sometimes don't fit as perfectly as the originals.

I had several new ones just like that. I returned them all and they reluctantly took them back, but also said that it's common and 'within spec'. Why should we pay the price for APple being unable to assembly properly? then design it differently, but don't say it's within spec! It's obviously not supposed to bulge out. If you press down from above it will pop out even more! Try it!

haha. That cracked me up. I actually did try it before reading that, but I love the recommendation to try and make it worse.

I can't believe it's within spec to have some of the aluminum bulging out. And since mine is refurbed I'm betting it's going to be even more difficult to return it. I suppose I'll try calling Monday and see what they say.

Maybe if you just rest your hands a littttle too heavily while you're using it it will bulge out so much that Apple will see it as a fault. I pressed mine from above and it quite literally popped out in a u-shaoped bulge! That's my recommendation. Apple has brought this on itself...

Same thing with my MBP refurb. I cant believe they say they put it through a strenious test to make sure everything is exact, and there's a blantant bent a-ss piece sticking out in your face. You would think the repair people would be like "oh, hey, there's a bent a-ss piece sticking out, maybe ill take 1 minute and bend it back with all the tools i have". Apparently not.

My refurb also has the notorious bowing problem where the middle of the bottom case is lower than the sides. This is very minimal and I can live with it. Let us know what the say about the bent latch though.

If you are talking about the part where the button to open the screen is.. I have it also on my refurb.

Those of you with refurbs and the bulging problem are you going to try and return it or are you just going to put up with the problem? If you've had it for a while has the problem gotten worse?

Mine also has this problem and I find it unacceptable. You pay for a Referb Unit expecting it to be in close to new shape and not have a defect. When you buy an Apple Product it's like buying a used highend car, you expect it to be in close to mint shape otherwise it's not worth it.

Not highend car. Apple is not a luxury brand, it is just another consumer company, like Toyota, or Honda, or Ford, not Lexus.

And what about the people that bought a non-refurb and have the same problem? I guess they just get the shaft?

I don't know where you got this information, but you're wrong. Only components that are damaged and/or malfunctioning are replaced. Minor cosmetic issues are acceptable for refurbished machines.

Bull****. It's about being a smart consumer. I saved $1000 by buying a slightly used machine, complete will a full warranty.

My brand new MacBook Pro just got this small buldge just above the latch. I am not happy, it only 3 weeks old. I don't want to lose my computer for 7 buisness days, but I think I a going to have too.

Then again, I think I will just wait it out. If it were to get worse, do you think it would still be something they would cover if I have AppleCare. I don't want them to turn around and claim that it is not covered under the terms of the warranty.
