Somewhere in PA.
Hello.

I'm thinking long term plans here, but I'm wondering, should I get a refurbished iMac or a new one?

Refurbished will have an i5 Quad Core. If I get a new one it will have a Dual Core. Both are 1700. Is it safe getting a refurbished one?

Safe

Safe. You save money which could be spent on AppleCare + you still get standard warranty so you have nothing to lose. I just received my 21.5" refurb and you cannot tell that it was a refurb, it just works and works GREAT.

Go get the refurb and save some money =)

Well, I'm mostly worried about the screen, I've had an iMac before and I eventually just got a refund becuase there was ALWAYS a problem with the screen, first it had dead pixels, then some weird pixel that reflected like water on a screen, I eventually just got sick of it. Will I get the same service I got with a new 21.5 inch? Or will they not just replace it and make me wait 2 weeks for them to fix it.

Possibly

I heard somewhere on these forums that Apple Stores cannot just replace refurbs, something about that they have to be repaired, and also, the 21.5" that I received has the slightest backlight leaking, hardly a problem as it can be only seen on a black background.

Refurb's go through a lot more checking than a normal new machine, so it's much less likely to have problems. If a machine was refurb'd for having a yellow screen, they obviously won't sell it refurb'd to you with the same problem.

Once again, it comes with the standard warranty =)

Ah, alright. How's Apple's shipping? How do I send it back if there is a problem?

Excellent

Apple shipping is excellent. I live in New Zealand, I ordered on Friday, and it was dispatched the same day. Item shipped from Sydney, and arrived on Tuesday, one day ahead of schedule from Apple site.

I'm pretty sure they send you a shipping label if you want to return it, or they tell you to take it to a apple authorized repair store? I'm not sure as I have never encountered this yet =) :D

Ah, thanks. I'm going with the more powerful refurbished one. When I have the money, that is.

Refurbs are hit or miss. I am a big proponet of refurbs but my last bout of dealing with applecare over a refurb that had to be replaced three times.

Once for a chip of the glass screen and gash on the back.
Second for a yellow screen.
Third was for a machine that was crushed on the box on one side. Had a broken screen, box was smashed and torn on the top left corner and the handle was broken off.

The boxes they ship them are not adequate. As fedex is very rough.

Apple came through and is shipping me a brand new C2D 3.33 21.5 with ATI GPU.

Yeah they messed up along with fedex but in the end their customer service is top notch. Very professional and the best in the business.

I think my case is rare and would go ahead and buy a refurb. Will i ever again. Hard to say.
