soooo..back in january we were predicting that the MBAs would be hitting the refurb store right about now. any news on that? maybe this tuesday?

Who knows. The Air has been a hot seller and just started selling only in February. I would give it a few more months before seeing the Air on their website with refurbished prices.

Refurbs show up whenever - not necessarily on Tuesdays. I've seen them load up on weekend nights especially.

I'd bet the Air's will be at least another 3-6 weeks before they start showing up in refurb section. There will be some good units there too since some were being exchanged for merely not sitting 'right' or not having the ability to watch two HD movies in separate windows concurrently. Or just because they weren't orig. purchasers cup of tea and they exchanged for MB/MBPs.

I'm sure Apple online store will have MIR refurbs in about month or so.
I have purchased 3 Apple refurb products (ACD 20'', iPod 30GB, iPod nano 2GB) and they all have been excellent.

I am starting to wonder if they have enough MBAs to start selling refurbs, but are holding that back due to slow sales of the units to encourage those holding out for refurbs to pay full price...

You are close.

I believe the MBA are selling SO WELL that they have no incentive to offer refurbs; people are snapping them up at full price.

There are enough documented cases of issues, replacements, DOAs, etc., that these units must be getting repaired and the outlet for them is the Refurbished Sales. If they are truly selling well then there is undoubtedly an X% of replacement units, esp. with a rev. A of a brand new product. The more they sell, the higher the total # of units there will be to be fixed and resold.

Are they really flying off the shelves though? I've seen barely used 1.8ghz models w/ SSD and the superdrive go for little over $2000 on eBay.

I totally agree. I was at a local BB and they told me they had sold about 5 a month and that their store was getting ready to clearance a big chunk of them soon just to move them. The local Best Buy is the only place to get apple in a store now since CompUSA closed. That they just didn't appeal to people when the Macbook is only 2 pounds more and has WAY more features for a significant savings. As I have said before, save yourself 700.00 on the entry model and buy a gym membership if you have issues with 2 additional pounds.

When the 2nd Gen MBA hits, the refurbs will begin to hit the site. I was under the impression they have gone over pretty well for folks that are looking realistically at what they need. 5 a month at a Best Buy might be a good number actually. How many BB's are there across the country that have apple stores?

As far as the MB being a better value, sure it is. But, when you compare displays of both hte MB and the MBA, the MBA is a hands down winner. C'mon, LED backlit displays are the tits. At that point, I'd think that folks with the money to spend are then looking at the Air vrs. the Pro.

I object; the MBA screen does not look like tits! Just did a visual comparison--Sorry your wrong. ;)

I didnt' say "looks like tits", I said "is the tits". Meaning, it's one of the best parts of the laptop, the one that garners your immediate attention, the sharp and pointed pixels that stimulate your imagination... need I go on?

taxes

you'll pay taxes on refurbished products from the apple store. That will likely make up most of the difference in cost if you were to buy it from, say, amazon, where it's tax free. Am I wrong?

This long without refurbs? Hell, the recent revision of the Macbook (which came after the MBA) is already in the refurb store.

You are correct for a lot of different refurb models vrs Amazon. I guess it would alll depend on how little they discounted a refurb. I'm guessing not enough to make it worth your while compared to Amazon.

Yeah..I noticed that today as well..I purchased my Air through MacMall for 1698..with no tax and free shipping..

Refurb SSD Airs $2699

+ free shipping on Apple online store today. I have not seen refurb SSD Airs available until now.

This is ~$400 off retail though still expensive, I know. But it is starting to push me off the fence where I've been sitting for weeks now.

I travel a lot (usually at least one flight a week) with my 12" PBG4 1.5 (my main Mac) - tired of its thickness and slowness. Looking for excuse to upgrade to Air, would be my first Intel mac. I know the Air will be thinner - will I notice an improvement in speed?

Hey I was just looking at those wonderful prices at the refurb store at Apple.com and I was in love.

I can get a 1.8 GHZ right now instead for a 1.6 GHZ for the price of $1,699.

Not too bad Apple :D

I've made the decision that on 'buying day' when I have the right amount of cash saved up, that I'll be ordering an iMac and a MBA. However...I'm really having to think about whether or not I'll get a refurb MBA. The iMac is a given...but the only reason I'm thinking about paying for a new MBA is simply for the original packaging...is that a bad thing...or a really bad thing?
