regarding the MB rumors

I've been reading the recent rumors of a possible new MB unveiling (maybe in January?). I was just wondering, what do current MB owners think about this? I'm kind of new to the Mac side of things, but it seems to reason with the constant unveiling of new products by Apple, people get upgrade fever pretty often.

I bought a 2Ghz C2D MB last January, and it's in extremely good condition (only 29 cycles on the battery), but I have this fear that in January this whole new line is going to be released...you know, complete with an increased memory limit, processing speed, ATi video (albeit very low end), and of course Leopard included.

part of me screams 'Sell now! Buy again later!' while the other half thinks this computer is plenty powerful enough to get me through the next 3-5 years.

what do you guys think? what is the normal behavior for Mac users in terms of upgrading/buying new Macs?

You just deal with it and be happy with what you have. Unless you're rich; then you go out and buy all you want.

I was at a point at which I needed a new laptop posthaste, so I bought one that (more than) met my needs. If Apple releases a quad core @ 4.75 GHz with a 3TB HD and a 8x Blu-Ray drive and 8GB RAM tomorrow for $399? My MacBook will still be a laptop that meets (and exceeds) my needs. Will I be tempted? Sure. I'm a geek - I like geek toys. But will I be any less well-served by my MacBook? No. Therefore, it's not money wasted and there's no need for me to upgrade before this machine has outlived its usefulness to me. ^_^

Im in the same boat. I currently have a macbook 2Ghz core duo with 2 GB of ram, and a 60 GB HDD and to be honest, its plenty powerful but I really want to upgrade and here's why....

1. Im running out of room on the HDD. I know I can upgrade cheap though.

2. My battery isn't lasting nearly as long as it should. I get about an hour before it powers off. It doesnt sleep, it just turns thee whole macbook off like a hard crash. I know I can replace that also.

3. The plastic is starting to crack around the edge of where the palm rest meets the side near the slot opening for the dvd, and also cracking on the other side by the USB ports.

4. The touchpad doesnt seem to work as well as it used to. It seems like I really have to put pressure around the edges to get it to respond.

So.... Im really hoping that there are new aluminum macbooks in November, but if there arent, I may go for a powerbook because the plastic cracking really bothers me. Also, I dont want to have to worry about discoloration again. In addition, I think the LED display and the backlit keyboard would be a sweet little extra.

I had the same problem with my battery. Read this. The apple store replaced my battery for free because of this, and I now get 4-5 hours of battery life instead of 60-90 minutes. Have you tried talking to apple support about your problems? they may be able to help you...

Macs seem to really hold their value though, so if they are going to release them soon, you'd probably get more money for it if you tried to ebay/craigslist it now rather than later.


I'll probably just keep my macbook for another couple of years.

yeah... I'm definitely selling mine... its just killing me waiting for these updates to the MB/MBP. Alas, I cannot be without a laptop for more than a few days so I'll buy a new one, then sell mine even if it means I lose a few bucks. Also, its just easier to transfer all my data over to the new one. I'm thinking with the aluminum case, I'll hang on to that one until it dies. I had my iBook for quite some time (I want to say over 4 years) and only upgraded when the logic board finally quit on me.

its really nothing to worry about, your system is more than powerful enough to get you through the next 3 years. usually i go with the 4 year cycle plan for upgrading. maybe 3 is more realistic for the deep pockets.

of course the next lineup is going to be leaps beyond yours, thats how it works. i bought my pb only to find a year later something with an intel processor and HD screen comes out for a lil less than my G4.
