Registering/Transferring a Domain

I own the .net and .us of a domain name, and the .com extension has recently become available, but only if I register with velnet.com (instead of my current registtat godaddy.com). This is a problem as the domain would cost £15 instead of $8.95 and the support hotline would be an international call.

What would I need to do in order to secure this domain from velnet.com and ditch them completely and keep everything under my existing godaddy account? My understanding is that I will first have to register with velnet, wait 60 days, then transfer it for an additional fee, and that velnet might reject the transfer anyway. Is that correct? Seems like an awful lot of work, and I may just wait to see if the domain expires completely and is opened to all registrars (does that eventually happen?)

I think you have it all figured out. I wouldn't worry about Velnet blocking the transfer release. I've never had that happen to me and don't think could possibly happen all that often, because if that were the case, what goes around comes around and the smaller domain companies would be screwed.

I'm also not sure that the domain name will expire and be open ever to the public. My first domain still is not available 2 years after I broke it off with my last host - I don't need it but I still check in on it every once in a while just to see.

My first domain registrar sucked. After putting up with them for about 6 months I decided to transfer the domain to GoDaddy. I paid the $20 fee, waited a week, and never got the domain, or my $20 back. Transferring is definitely a hassle, but you appear to know what to do (I was a noob). Good luck.

The domain you want should be available in GoDaddy too. Velnet is a reseller so there could be some problems.

The domain you want should be available to the public soon. It's very probable that several domain tasters are going to buy it asap, and then drop it after 5-6 days.

Do not visit the site, do not use WHOIS from any registrar or the domain taster could notice your interest and keep the domain. I always use Network Utilities > Whois > Internic.net to do all my whois.
