I made a very dumb mistake in not backing up the files I deleted in an attempt to downgrade from Airport 3.4 on my PB (which is about to be replaced!)

Long story short - I did a clean install of Panther and have now got most software working. I have a Carbon Copy backup on my other drive which contains a perfect install (but is missing some files needed to make Airport function).

Now however a number of my programs seem to have forgotton they're registered. I dragged them back from the back-up drive and the preference information to if I could find it. My question is, which files do I need to drage back in order for my programs to know they're registered and where are they all kept?

I can't use CCC to rewrite my HD because it's missing the airport files I need. Can this be resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Most applications, but not all, keep registration information in their preferences file. These could be in one of two folders, either /Library/Preferences, or, more likely, [home]/Library/Preferences/. A few programs have separate preference files for settings and registration information.

For each application that you've registered, do a search for the application name in each preferences folder (go to the folder, select selection from the search box menu at the top right of the Finder window, then type in the application name). Copy the files it finds to the corresponding preferences folder on your new system, and hopefully that will fix things.

Common Locations to look for Registration Data are:
/Library/Preferences
~/Library/Preferences
/Library/Application Support
~/Library/Application Support

...sometimes developers might hide this information using an invisible file.

You could also contact the developer and request your serial to be resent to your email explaining the situation.

if you have registered the apps, you probably get the registration numbers from each app vendor by sending them email and simply asking for it :) if you don't own the apps, now is a good time to pay for them because it seems that you find them useful now that they currently cannot be used.
