iPad Pro Regrets moving to the new 12.9" iPad?

Anyone regret or find something you can't do on you iPad you accomplished on your Mac Book? Do you miss on your 13" Mac Book Pro? My uses are MS One Note as it syncs notes charts, and symbols with my 27"and Word and Excel to track or research charts and market in areas around home. MS Note could be changed for something to sync research.
Would it be simpler to access trading and track it on the Pador go for another MB tp replace my 2014.

I had a time where I thought the 12.9’’ could do both my iPad and MacBook tasks. Loooong story of trying to get it to work out, in essence the Software combined with weak display output to external monitors was the iPads limiting factor, especially for graphics work. In the end I’ve settled with - iPad Pro 11’’ 256GB, MacBook Pro 16’’ Base and iPhone 128GB (Was 256GB). Covers all my computing needs from graphical work all the way through to media consumption.

I can’t say I regret moving to a 12.9“ iPad, but it’s worth mentioning that for me, it’s too heavy. When holding the iPad for a long period, it gets uncomfortable due to the weight. Other than that, it’s a great device.

I sold my Macbook and am using the iPad with a Magic Keyboard case as a laptop replacement. Mostly it’s working well, but sometimes things can be cumbersome compared to a Macbook. For example, not all of my photos are stored in the Photos App. Some Apps assume that the Photos App is the only place where photos are located and not in Files.

Another limitation is that external displays only mirror the screen leaving black bars. Sure some specific Apps can use the whole of an external display, when watching a video for example, but this mars what could be a true laptop replacement.

Thank you for your input. Don't have to worry about 2nd monitor as I have the 27" and second on desk. I did not think about the weight issue. Too heavy for a shoulder bag? Must utilize that as it sucks to use a cane to walk.

I have a hard time believing an iPad would crack without using it with too much force.

The weight of the tablet itself is easy to adjust to for most owners. The 12.9 weighs about as much as the very first iPad did.

It’s lighter than a lot of laptops and certainly not too heavy to carry in a bag.

If I wanted to replace a MacBook this close to new ARM Macs coming out, and I mostly worked connected to a 27” monitor, I’d try the 11” iPad Pro (and an inexpensive BT keyboard), knowing that in the future I could upgrade to an ARM MacBook or Mac Mini and end up with a more ergonomic iPad too.

Every year I think “this will be the year Apple shows us the potential of a big and powerful iPad”. But that never happened. The hardware is there but apps, features and big screen optimizations are not. At this point its clear Apple only sees the 12.9 as a “higher price point iPad”, so I have this amazing machine that I love but it doesnt come lose to its potential. I’ve considered selling it in favor of a more comfortable 11” but I’m holding off because.... next year will be the year Apple shows us the potential of a big and powerful iPad.

I own a 16” MBP and I keep that docked on my desk while I carry the 12.9 LTE with Magic Keyboard as part of my everyday carry/travel and it works perfectly for me. At home, I use my iPad Mini 5 for anything in between. All depends on your use.

In a work from home environment, my iPad Pro 12.9” has become even more essential as a second screen to my MacBook. For work, I use my iPad for

1) Video calls (Webex and Zoom) as my iPad front camera is better than laptop caperas
2) Second screen for financial and other data I need to view while working on my Laptop
3) Spreadsheets, note taking, and other functions while in split screen

For all fo this, the extra screen real estate is critical. For me the big iPad is working exactly as intended, with iOS as a benefit. I use many work apps that are available on iOS but not on a standard oS.

All that said, I still need a real laptop or computer to remote into my office computer, so I continue to view the iPad as part of a computing solution

It all depends on your tastes. I have bought MacBook Pro 16’’ because on a larger screen it’s easier to prepare excel models and presentations which are on the daily basis. (I switched this summer to 16’’ from 10 years on 13’’ and I’m happy now). Although someone 13’’ is enough.

the same here. I had been using iPad 2 gen for all those years before yesterday I updated to iPad Pro 12.9 2020. It’s difficult for me to understand what cases are for 11’’ as there is a little difference in weight and size, but it’s more comfortable for content consumption.

btw I had an experiment in Apple store and some websites switch to mob version on 11’’, while 12.9 is always with real web version.

It really depends on your use case, which from your description is not clear to me.
Due to it’s form factor, software and hardware limitations, the iPad Pro is not able to replace your laptop in terms of pure productivity power. I use the iPad (with keyboard) for some ‘casual’ work (emails, reviewing reports etc.) but “pro” work (e.g. creating extensive reports, presentations, analyses, clean mailbox etc.) gets done much faster on my laptop. Even using the MKB didn’t resolve this for me (hence returned it).

I am non technical at work, so my requirements are MS Office type stuff i.e spreadsheets, documents, meetings and cloud apps that work in browsers. I have a 12.9" IPP (MK + pen) and a 13" MBP.

Since getting the IPP I have not used the MBP more than once. Initially I found it 'weird' with new gestures, every app full screen, lack of real second screen support. But pushed on to get to know the device (instead of just giving up) and have fully adopted a new way of working.

What is the benefit you may ask, why not just stick with the MBP... it's a 2-in-1 device. I can do all my work tasks and then at the end of the day I can use it as a tablet.. I can take it off the keyboard, browse on the sofa.. watch films.. draw really bad pictures.. play games on it.. let the kids play with it.

Still loving my 12.9 pro With magic keyboard and when i want to use it without i put on the smart folio and works well. Happy to stay with this form factor now as my phone is big enough to use for other tasks.

When I upgraded my 10.5" IPP I bought the 12.9" thinking it would work great for what I used the old one for, basic iPad stuff with the pencil etc. I found that it was too large, not heavy, to carry with me all day like I did with the 10.5. So, I bought an 11" to keep with me all day and the 12.9 became a desktop companion to my 16" MBP and I added a Magic Keyboard to make it more of a desktop device. Using it this way I have found a number of ways that it works better than the MBP for some tasks, I don't use it as a screen extension rather always in standalone mode. So, I don't regret the purchase but I have not ended up using it in the way I originally planned.

The argument to replace a laptop is certainly case by case. For me, the 12.9” attached to MKB in a SF Bags case goes everywhere with me. Carrying my car keys, few credit cards/license, pencil, charging cables, air pods, small power adapter and battery pack. For example, if I wanted to reply to an email on the iPad instead of my phone, the iPad is open and ready in an instant.

My late-2013 MBP would need a little more time to be ready to do that and feels less like an extension of my iPhone.

For other uses, editing photos, heavy spreadsheet use, the laptop wins at home.

I moved to the 12.9 in 2015. Zero regrets. 350,000 plus flying miles (economy class). countless car miles. Zero regrets.
From teaching class, checking on relief projects to relaxing. Zero regrets. The 12.9 is now much smaller than the 2015 model and has always been smaller than the laptop I carried. Add unlimited data. Zero regrets.

The iPhone 11 Pro Max replaced my 12.9 iPad Pro. Far superior battery life and you always have it with you.

I also bought the latest 2020 13" MBP if I want to work outside which is not something you can do on a 12.9 iPad Pro.
