Firstly, let me apologise if this has been covered elsewhere, there are just too many conflicting threads out there regarding similar situations.

Any way, my 18 month 3G contract is about to end (yes I queued for hours on launch day!) and I'll shortly be upgrading. However, I got a really good deal on a 3GS and have had this for a few months.

So rather than upgrade to a 3GS, I'd like to go for a £25+£5 (web) bolt on with a free PS3, then just stick the SIM in my 3GS. I suspected that visual voicemail wouldn't work (which has been confirmed somewhat). However the guy in the shop said that my unlimited data wouldn't work with iPhone.

I think this is just a case of changing the settings from idata.o2.co.uk to wap.o2.co.uk but I'm not sure - and don't want to be stuck without data / expensive data for 18-24 months.

I don't want to unlock the phone in any way either.

Can anyone help with confirmation of this?

To use a NON iphone monthly contract in your iPhone.

In Cellular Data change idata.o2.co.uk to...................... mobile.o2.co.uk

In MMS change idata.o2.co.uk to...................... wap.o2.co.uk

Finally, turn your iPhone off and then back on again

If you are doing this for this first time, it's recommended you then text MMS to 1010.
This will setup picture messaging for you, and send you an MMS when it's ready.

Please note: anytime you insert a different SIM or reset your network settings you will need to follow this settings change.

I went ahead and signed up for a regular contract, so hopefully this works!

Thanks for all the help.

WHy not just get an iPhone £20 rolling 1 month contract? get the unlimited text, visual voicemail, data wifi etc?

I did this 2 weeks ago, it works.

Although I will check my next bill to make sure I've not paid for 3G usage!

One thing though, obviously covered many times, how bad is O2's 3G coverage!? I thought it was my phone at first.

@t0mat0 It was all about the free PS3! And I ended up with a new Nokia I can send to Envirofone for £85!

I have everything set up now and it appears to be working fine. It's worth noting that if you do do this, make sure to set up your voicemail to text notifications - otherwise you won't know you have a voicemail!

Again - thanks for the help! :)
