Reinstalled iPhoto and have peace of mind

Well, after months of frustration with bland, non-functional Photos, reinstalled iPhoto and have my external editor (Pixelmator) ready, have My Photo stream working properly, photos are organized well, editing works like it should do, and have finally peace of mind.

Don't import pictures from iPhoto is all I can say. I did it from aperture and it lost all my edits.
I'll eventually move on, maybe start with a clean cut and import 2016 photos in.

Piece of mind? Maybe for today, but you know that the clock is ticking on iPhoto...so perhaps finding an alternative now before you HAVE TO will give a more lasting piece of mind. I'm looking hard at LR6, especially since it takes my Nik plugins. Heard great things about Capture Pro, but as of now, Nik isn't compatible...

I'd REALLY like to stay within the Apple ecosystem for all the iCloud linking...but looking more and more like that won't happen...

The clock is ticking on all Apple apps. About a year ago I started looking for alternatives for all of them.

Today I also went back to iPhoto. Fortunately a simple process.

For my incredibly simple demands for Photos, it fails miserably. Tried a couple of shared albums yesterday and the day before. Few people got invites and those got delivered up to a day later. No access to albums with a note the album is not shared (though at my end it shows shared and the users in question being part of the "People").

Yesterday I gave people a choice by loading the same shots in Dropbox. All experienced Apple users, Mac and iOS, 4 out of 5 opted for Dropbox. Sort of gave me a idea how well the new Photos app is being embraced by others.

I think I will use iPhoto for now. Not sure for how long. I kind of embraced the move to Garageband X, iMovie X, because they all became more powerful (backed up by pro apps like Logic Pro and Final Cut); new iWork is also I like, but for Photos, thats really really bad move.

One thing i noticed is how iPhoto has nicer interface, more understandable.
Once I open the edit tab, all edit functions are there, ready to use.
In Photos, I have to manually add sharpness, for example, and add it for EVERY photo EVERY time.

For C1 and Nik: In C1, choose "Export Variant", and set your export folder. Before exporting, select "Open With" and choose the Nik plugin of your choice. Exporting the variant will open it directly with the selected Nik plugin. I believe C1 has an auto import from select folder option.

Not much different than Aperture, or I believe, LR except you do the export.

I believe they did it to push users into iCloud, which they succeeded in (I for example bought 20 GB), wouldn't mind anyway, since email is growing, but the app is horrendous. Now it imports all photos.

I believe you're right about iCloud. And that's where I'm finding it's a fail. In the last few days I've sent 3 shared albums up to iCloud. Here's my experience.

1) iCloud took an eternity to load the first album. It was so slow I ended up with 3 copies of each photo, probably a result of my trying to get it to do something. The second went up ok. Last night the 3rd. Same as the first.

2) Invites either did not go out or were delivered an unknown number of hours later. I know because I always cc myself and I had to wait till the next morning to receive my invite (on iCloud mail).

3) Those that received an invite were greeted with a message that no shared album existed. Yet on my end it showed the album shared with those people. This is a known issue.

4) After the first album I gave 5 experienced OS X/iOS users a choice between Dropbox and iCloud. 4 of the 5 chose Dropbox.

For a simple app with very limited capabilities (if not useless DAM), the navigation is unecessarily complex and not very reliable.

The NIK suite works perfectly fine with C1 Pro. For some reason they just don't advertise that. (NIK or C1). In the newest version of C1 you can "edit with" a NIK plugin virtually the same way you did in Aperture, though the menus look different of course. And just like Aperture it returns an edited TIFF to the C1 catalog when you save. I use it all the time. The entire NIK suite works in this fashion though I mainly use Silver EFX.

Had similar experience.
For some reason, the My Photo stream stopped syncing, all syncing actually stopped,
turned on iCloud Library, which just ate my internet for breakfast for days, stuck with 500 photos being uploaded or something like that.. terrible

That's great news! I haven't pulled the trigger on an Aperture alternative yet, so will have to test out the C1 demo as well as LR6
