The latest update(10.4.5) to Tiger has done some damage to my system. My Macally Icekey keyboard number pad no longer functions. My Logitech MX1000 mouse has lost functionality...no Expose. I have tried to archive and install to go back to the earlier update but run into a problem.....cannot proceed due to a hard drive problem. So, it seems that I will have to erase and install. Ok, I can reinstall my software. I've gone back and downloaded the zipped files for programs like transparent dock and menucalendarclock etc. Yes, I know I could just find them once again. I'm currently using SeaMonkey as my browser and email client. I'll save a copy of my profile plus my wife's profile. How about my iTunes? Can I just save a copy of the iTunes library and then substitute it after I reinstall? How bout the same with iPhoto library? BTW I have Toast and I was thinking that I would make a "burn" folder and just burn my data files/music/pics from my profile and my wife's (guess I should put all her stuff in a folder and put it in a "shared" folder so I could access it from my profile. Don't know exactly what the size of the folder would be but Toast says that it will "span" and I could burn it to a DVD DL if necessary. Anyway, would like your thoughts on this. Also when I update can I update to just 10.4.4? Thanks

To save your music from iTunes and pictures from iPhoto;

Open finder, go to music, then iTunes, then take the "iTunes Music" folder and drag that to the desktop.

Then open finder, then go to pictures, and take the whole "iPhoto Library" folder and drag that to the desktop. Now all your music and pictures are on the desktop. If you have an external harddrive, it would be much easier to move files from computer -> harddrive -> computer after clean install, but you can burn all that data to dvd's - it might just take a while and a good number of dvd's depending on how many songs/pictures you have.

After reinstalling, you can drag the iTunes library/iPhoto library folders back to their respective places and it should ask you if you want to override the folder that is already there, click yes. Open iTunes - if the music isn't there, then just go to file, add to library and then find that folder and add the whole thing. Same idea applies to your pictures + iPhoto.

I don't know about updating to 10.4.4, I don't believe that's an option. However, you may be able to download the file on a site somewhere? I'll look for you and add the link to this post if I find it, but I doub't I'll find anything.

You might, as a precaution, also want to de-authorize the system from iTunes/iTMS just in case. Only takes a sec, and only takes a sec to reauthorize it.

Yeah, I didn't read that the first time through. If your harddrive is having trouble, might as well get it replaced before doing all that - get a bit of an upgrade too, treat yourself nicely :).

however, if it's working fine, just do as my first post said.

Hmmm, why do I/would I need to de-authorize the system from iTunes??? Oh yes, how would I do that? Thanks for your help. Cheers

My hard drive doesn't seem to have problems. HOWEVER, this did happen to me once before and I had to do an erase and install. Course I didn't have near the same amount of "stuff" to transfer. I do believe that the hard drive is ok, it's just that new update that has fouled things up. I read where others have had the same problem with their Logitech mouse that I have. YES, I would like to upgrade to a bigger HD as mine is oem 80GB and I do have another slot that I could put it in (1.6 G5) but right now $ is a bit scarce. So, I'll hold off on that for a bit. I just finished copying my wife's iPhoto library; docuements; and SeaMonkey profile. Put it in her Public folder so I can access it from my profile. I'll do the same with mine and then drag into Toast and see what happens. Maybe later on tonite I'll get going. Let you know what happens. Cheers

You don't really need to de-authorize your computer - unless you buy alot of music off of the iTunes Music Store. You can only use the music on a certain number of computers. de-authorizing before reinstalling will simply give you an extra computer to play the music on - however, like i said, it's usually not a problem whether you do or not.

To do this, in iTunes go to advanced/then click deauthorize computer.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Having a bit of problem with my wife's iPhoto library. I copied it and placed it in her public folder. Went to my profile and brought up all her "stuff". Good so far. iPhoto I couldn't open because it said I didn't have sufficient priveleges. Back to work on that.

Do you have the administrator account? If your wife does, you'll need to move everything over to there and burn it from that account. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for any reason other than that.

Seems like a TON of work.

You know, this is exactly why an external FireWire drive and SuperDuper are essential. You can clone the internal drive to the FW drive, then do your OS updates. If anything goes wrong, boot from the external and clone it back to the internal and everything is exactly as it was before things went awry.

Yeah, I always wish I could bring my external drive over and help someone out with this kind of thing, it's so much work burning things to cd's and the like.

Very, very unlikely -- in fact, problems like these caused by an update are even more unlikely given the fact that you now report multiple erase and installs.

Erase and installs should almost never be necessary. Find your actual problem before doing anything else, and I promise you'll be much happier in the long run.
