Relationships; ATV2 MBP and Mac Mini and more

Hi there!

Please tell me about relationships We currently have:

2 MBPs (we each have our own iTune account) Two separate libraries.
1 ATV2
1 Airport Extreme
Netgear ReadyNas with 2tb (upgradeable to 4tb)
1 55" Samsung HDTV

Where and how would a mac mini fit in our HTPC setup?

I did the whole jailbreak and installing XBMC but as much as I tried, I couldn't get it to play nice with our NAS. It froze one day, I reset it and never bothered to jailbreak again.

My wife, for the moment, likes and is used to the ATV2 interface. As well as our live in Pops. I would hate to retrain him on a new menu system (I on the other hand liked Plex).

So if we got a mini, could we keep two separate iTune accounts? Store all our music and movies on the NAS and how would our notebooks integrate with it all? As the title says, what would the relationships be?

No one? My reference as far as how it would all play together would stem from two iTune accounts and how it would coexist with a mac mini and our media on the NAS.

From what I gather, a mini would be always "on" with the NAS and ATV2 as the front end if you will. Although I would try and introduce Plex and see if it would fly.

Would there be any clashing with the accounts and reading the media from the NAS?

Well to access the media from your NAS on your ATV, you could use Firecore's ATV Flash black ($30) and their "media" feature. It works very well for me and my time capsule.

Firecore's stuff isn't anything you can't do on your own and pocket the $30 for beer money. If the NAS had issues before, it's going to still have issues as the method to access it (afp, smb, cifs, etc) is still going to be the same and a protocol is a protocol.

I'd sort out the NAS issues and go from there. Once you have a centralized library you can pick and choose the method that's preferable to you to use it. It's all about whether it's iTunes or ripped content and what the client access devices are.

Understood about the NAS part. So would there be two separate libraries on the NAS. i.e. If I want to watch Walking Dead Season Pass, I would point the library to the NAS and if she wants to watch NCIS, same thing? I guess thats what I was really wondering.

Right now, we each would have to keep our respective laptops open whenever we want to watch a show.
