Hello. Thanks for reading. 2 questions.

1. Does anyone know the release date for the new macbook air in the United Kingdom? I assume there is a new model as the last was Summer 09. Also any idea what screen sizes will be available?

2. I currently own a 2009 Macbook pro 17 which is great but im going from a home based job to one which means a lot travelling - car, plane, public transport. Thus im selling this to get a more compact and travel friendly mac. I mostly use it for internet, mailing, file viewing, some online games, itunes and a few programs like Power Point and Photo shop. I cant decide whether to get a new air or a new 13 inch screen pro. A cd/dvd drive isnt important at all really. Any ideas or advice.

thanks again for reading. Chris

1. C'mon........
2. Either would be fine, you will get longer battery from a 13 MBP unless the new Air is a low powered ULV machine.

1.) Are you serious? Or new to MacRumors it seems..? There are literally thousands of threads here speculating widely about the FATE of the MBA...

2.) The MBA should be fine for that (its for me) but check out the multiple posts on that one as well.

It's anyone's call right now... nobody knows for sure. However, the recent rumors have been saying possibly September. Mid-September is when the iPod update schedule plays out with a live event. I think it's extremely possible that Apple will focus on more than just the iPod at that event. However, it's possible Apple focuses on the iPod in September and does a second event for October.

Either way, I would say new MBAs, new iPods, new smaller iPad, and new iTV (to replace AppleTV) before November 2010. I am adding all of the rumors and making sense of them to be a couple of really great events where Apple knocks some things out of the park. I believe there will be two models of MBAs. Some are thinking 11.6 and maybe 13.3" displays, but I think it will be 13" and 15" displays.

In the end, this is ALL GUESSWORK and speculation. There is no factual information available to any of us. I am just using past releases, current rumors, and the fact that the MBA is long overdue for an update to take a few stabs here. However, I am very confident that many of us will have our new MBAs during 2010... and many will be buying new MBAs for Christmas too. I think the iPad/iPhones are setting up more Mac introductions/converts and the MBA just makes sense along with the newer Apple mobility products.

I'm going to go out on a lim and say that it most likely won't be updated until the beginning of next year. It seems that if it was just going to be a minor update, they would have done it already. A major update will require components that will mostly become available at cost effective prices very late this year so the very beginning of next year would make most sense. Whether this merges the MacBook Air line and the 13-inch MacBook Pro line is anyone's guess, as are screen sizes, specs and prices.

I needed a new laptop by the beginning of September, so I've just ordered a MacBook Pro which I'll use until February next year and then probably replace with a new MacBook Air (and later in the year transfer all my multimedia work to a new iMac, especially if the MacBook Air ends up with a smaller screen).

Well, given the fact I've just ordered a MacBook Pro, there is every chance that it will be updated the day after I open it. :p

1. Nope
2. Get an iPad
As an iPad owner, I have to say that I hope you were joking. The iPad is cleverly designed and is outstanding for casual Web browsing and playing recorded media. Beyond that, however, the iPad is woefully inferior to even the least powerful of the real computers. I could go on but as I have already done that elsewhere, I'll stop here.

Be sure to be willing to wait for October/Early November special keynote presentation if it doesn't happen at iPod event. Most don't think it will happen at iPod event, but for some reason the iPod doesn't seem worthy for its own event anymore. It could happen either way... but I think we all get a chance to buy a smaller iPad, new version(s) of the MBA, and a new iTV FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR!

"before November", "by the end of 2010." I think I can recall when it was expected before the end of 2009.

A new question: Has Jobs ever made any comments clearly about the Air, after his speech introducing it? And after that date, has he ever been seen using one?

I agree with the appleguy in that I don't think it will happen this year. I actually believe it won't be updated at all but will merge with the MBP once people realize that they hardly need internal optical drives on their mobile computers. I fear this will take another year or two, and until then the MBA will be EOL'ed.

I'd go for a MBA

#1 Nobody knows...

#2 I was in the same situation as you...and I got the Air. I have no regrets.

I have a work laptop (Lenovo) that I have to travel with. I got the MacBook Air because of the light weight and compact form factor, since I have to drag around both (believe me, if I could leave the work computer at home, I would).

My mother-in-law has the (new 2010) 13 inch MacBook Pro. The extra 1.5 pounds, thickness, and useless (for me) optical drive reinforced my decision to go with the Air.

If there was no other choice, I probably would go with the 13" MBPro. However, as long as there is an Air option, that would be the way I would go.

well it has been very very quiet on the MBA and the 13 MBP rumour front!

Whilst I never thought Sept was viable - that is always an iPod primary zone...
my MBA is still struggling.

I think I have decided to switch from MBA to 13 MBP now... am just waiting for the next MBP!

I will throw a big SSD in it, and enjoy the benefits of the ethernet / 2 USB ports... but not sure whether or not to completely ramp it up with extra RAM or not. Don't think I will - especially coming from my current MBA and 2GB RAM.

here is hoping the extra weight isn't too much of an issue for me, but come on Apple... please!

I have a 13" MBP and its honestly not heavy at all. I carry it with one hand and its just a pure bliss to have such a light weight machine. I guess I haven't been spoiled by the MBA yet:eek:

Sandy Bridge MBA isn't coming until Q2 2011, and I know this because the chips aren't coming until Q2 2011

OTOH SB based MBPs could come in Q1 2011
