Hi,

I thinking of possibly adding antoher PCIe audio/DSP cards in my cMP, leaving only 1 space for expansion. So, I'm looking for a combo card that can give me some USB3 expansion ports, as well as giving me SATA3 internal ports. Previously, I was going to buy an Apricorn Solo/Duo X2 and a cheap USB3 card.

Currently I have all 4 HD bays filled with HDs, a broken optical drive (will probably remove and replace with another HD), and an SSD drive with the OS/apps on in optical bay 2. I'd like to get at least one more SSDs in the future and would like to operate at SATA 3 speeds, possibly a RAID 0 setup.

In an ideal world I'd have a small RAID0 setup (perhaps 2x 128/256 drives) for OS, and then a separate SSD for samples. Hell, if i'm going crazy, I'd have a 4th SSD for current audio projects, but that's probably stretching things! I could achieve that with 2x Apricorn Duos, but don't have the space... if I have to live without one of them, i'd probably leave USB3 and have SATA 3 or a PCIe SSD instead, as i'd be benefitting from that whenever I use the machine, instead of the occasional USB3 transfer.

I've seen some older threads on Inateck and Syba cards - is anyone actually using one and if so, how is the speed compared to say the Apricorn? Any new developments?

Maybe thunderbolt isn't so silly after all :p

Cheers,

Ed

I would highly recommend the CalDigit FASTA-6GU3 Pro. http://www.caldigit.com/Fasta-6GU3pro/

Bootable on SATA/eSATA. USB 3.0 with UASP. No issues at all.

This is the one i'm going to try next in my mac pro 3.1. I called CalDigit. Great customer service. They said it would work fine to boot Windows 8.1.

I am returning an Apricorn Solo x2 because after 5 days I said forget this. Apricorn's tech support sucks to. Won't even call or email back.

Thanks guys. Does anyone have any read/write ratings using Blackmagic or anything? Basically, how does it compare with an Apricorn solo/duo x2?

Does it slow down if using the usb3? The esata ports are a cool extra treat - can all 6 ports be used at the same time at full tilt?

I think anything is better then the Apricorn solo/duo x2. The solo x2 only has two Sata lll ports, and no USD 3.0. One place to mount the SSD to directly, and the other is by cable which you have to supply power to.

You best bet is to call CalDigit. They have excellent customer service. Better to hear it from them to be assured of your questions.

A Solo X1 is $50 and gives you mounted 2.5" drive plus additional SATA port. I wouldn't say that "anything" is better then that. Especially when the next closest from comparible OWC and Sonnet products are $150-$250.

testing 4x 840 EVO @ 2 DUOx2 i.c.m. the FASTA6PRO

I'll be testing 4x 840 EVO @ 2 DUOx2 i.c.m. the FASTA6PRO within a few days. I'll report back asap.

PCIe config:

#1 HD5770 (need to change the 2600 / GTX-670) for freeing one PCIe slot
#2 FASTA6PRO
#3 DUOx2
#4 DUOx2

Previously, I was going to buy an Apricorn Solo/Duo X2 and a cheap USB3 card.

If you're looking for a clean inside job, I can recommend the DUOx2! See for more info our DUOx2 thread:

Cheers...
