Any one developing any

Reloading Ballistic Software for the iphone.

I know a lot of people who would be interested in this and even people that do not have iphones that would by one for this reason alone.

Good market if someone can do it..

Yes!

I am very interested in this type of software, and hopefully I can get ahold of a company and have them make it, it would be great to not have to buy a PDA to do this. I just got my iPhone and thought of this while I was at the range shooting my .308 yesterday.

Tell us what it is! There are quite a few iPhone developers on these forums. If it looks like something that can be done someone will probably do it.

Just out of interest how much would you pay for such an app?

What's the cross-section of gun owners who own an iPhone/iPod Touch that also reload their own ammo? Don't take it the wrong way- I own a couple of guns (A Belgian PS90, and a Walther P22) and an iPhone. I only know one guy who reloads his own ammo, and he is a technophobe... he does actually have a cell phone but it's one of the really old ones that just makes calls ;)

Anyway, my point is the market (from my view) seems too small to develop an app. If you can prove me wrong, maybe I'll add it to my development list :D

Hello,

I registered specifically to respond to this thread. There could be a fairly large market for this type of software, you would just have to target the right segment of shooters. There are many recreational shooters that spend high dollars on their hobby. I suggest anyone interested in finding out the potential for such software try posting some inquires on some of the larger shooting sites such as http://www.ar15.com

Also there is more to the possibilities than reloading, depending on how accurate you want to be you can figure in temp. and humidity along with trajectory charts etc.

Also the Law Enforcement market is there .

I think someone with iPhone development experience could partner up with an existing company to bring over a product or if they have the drive to strike it out on their own. It's all basic mathematics and if you post on the shooting forums the users will let you know what they want.

Some products to get you thinking...

I totally agree. If I knew how to program, I would do it myself and tap into this market.

It will be very information intensive and as mentioned above, a lot of mathmatics. Some other key points:

1. Allow user input for custom loads/information.
2. Allow Landscape mode for viewing charts
3. Provide updates as new information becomes available

As mentioned above, the best bet would be to partner up with someone in industry.

Whoever does it....Please...Please use a nice Mac UI and not an 80's era windows UI. Unfortunately, most ballistic programs out there have that UI look to it, so you would have to be creative on how information is processed.

Example UI's: These are just examples of the UI's I am talking about and in no way is it meant to degrade these existing apps. A picture is worth a thousand words and is the easiest way to describe what I am talking about.

Example of what not to do:

Example of a nice Mac UI:

I really hope someone does this...or I may have to teach myself how to do it.

Well, you have provided quite a bit of information and thought about the topic! It's something I will seriously consider adding to my queue.

Bear Hunter, believe me I would push the interface strengths of the iPhone. No "Windows Shareware" looking garbage :D

Thanks brother...and if you decide to tackle it and need a beta tester...drop me a PM. If developed right, I can see it having the same status as "Beatmaker" in the app store.

Good to hear someone's at least considering it. Here is another link with some info...

http://www.6mmbr.com/index.html
is a website focused on shooters that shoot long range and are after the very last bit of accuracy. It is nothing to drop thousands into a rifle for the slightest edge. I'm not sure how many own an iPhone or ipod Touch but I'm sure money could be made. If you look at the Horus Vision site you can see where their software sells for hundreds and they even offer it preinstalled on a PDA, so there is a market.

Of course the cheaper the App would be the better it would sell, maybe consider a "lite" version.

If you are really serious and would like to see what could be possible on the LEO/Govt side try a serious forum like http://www.10-8forums.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php

They have people that post there who are responsible for dept. and agency procurement.

On the ballistics page of the 6mmbr.com

http://www.6mmbr.com/ballistics.html

There are links to some free ballistics programs and a free spreadsheet could give you an idea of what kind of calculations you would be looking at.

Poke around and I think you might see an oppertunity, you have at least 2 sales here:)

Lord knows we don't need another flashlight.

A few other forums to guage interest....

http://www.m4carbine.net/

http://www.thehighroad.org/

http://glocktalk.com/forums/

Also note, I probably don't have to tell you, that shooting forums are like all forums be careful how you post, so it doesn't look like spam.

Hmm.. Looks interesting and doesn't seem too hard to do. I could definately put something like this together and make it look nice too.. Just about finished my current application and haven't got any other programs in line.
I've got the day off tomorrow, so I'll look through it and then probably give you a shout here with a yes/no once I've read up about it :)

Forgive my ignorance, but what is Reloading Ballistic Software?
What I am looking for specifically is not reloading software it is ballistics software that I can type in data I.e. Bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, velocity, weather data, and so on and it will give me the flight path of the bullet and also the correct drop and windage values in mils and MOA. This info is what about 70 percent of the shooters I know like to have available when they are shooting in competitions. Many people but palm pilots and the software and have yet another piece of gear to haul to the range. NightForce has great software that can be found at bearbasin.com/nfbs.htm

This sounds like a neat application, I'd be interested in taking a crack at that. Maybe TripleJ can tackle the reloading app and I can work on the Ballistics app you want to see...

If you need any help please feel free to contact me.

Been wanting this for a while.

I am in the IT field myself. And have a dozen or so guns
I do not have to much data but can get some if need be.

Yeah Nightforce is good stuff. I should have linked to them also. Also a good description to what I think people are looking for.

I've had a quick look at the different suggested sites, and there definately seems to be enough material for me to work with to create something nice, but since this'd be made for you guys, if possible, could you give me an idea of roughly what features you'd like the program to have?
I can't promise anything yet, but I'd like to give it a shot (no pun intended) :)

I asked about this a few weeks ago, and met crickets. I really hope this can be done. Even for a fee, I'd gladly pay have access to this kind of information on the go. I keep a log book, but to have it all in my iPhone would be so ideal.

Ask Apple
I'd love it, but I wonder if Apple would allow this?

We have to remember that Apple is pretty standoffish when it comes to weapons, as shown in this EULA from iTunes...

“Licensee also agrees that Licensee will not use the Apple Software for any purposes prohibited by United States law, including, without limitation, the development, design, manufacture or production of nuclear, missiles, or chemical or biological weapons.”
