A friend of mine's Gen 1 Intel iMac is giving him random error messages with his ATI video card, and randomly blacking out the screen. How can I uninstall / reinstall the ATI driver? Or is there a better way to troubleshoot this? Thanks!

Folks round here will need a bit more info to help you. Is your friend in OS X or bootcamp Windows. What programs are running when this happens. Does it happen right after the Mac is turned on or does the system have to be on for an hour or more. More detail will get more answers.

10.4, no windows. haven't played with it myself, but my question remains. Like windows, can I uninstall / reinstall the ATI drivers as a first realm of attack?

No, not simple to do like Windows. I've had 7 different Macs over the past 6 years and never once even tried. I just update when the updates come out. I've seen threads where people do that sort of thing but it reminds me of my late 80's UNIX experiences and I have never played around at that level.
