Relocated Items 10.15.3

Just did the update to 10.15.3 and got the Relocated Items folder with a file called paths.system_default.

It is in a barrage of folders specifically:

Relocated Items > private > etc > paths.system_default

There is a Preview file with the following text:



"During the last macOS upgrade or file migration, some of your files couldn’t be moved to their new locations. This folder contains these files.
Configuration files

These configuration files were modified or customised by you, by another user or by an app. The modifications are incompatible with the recent macOS upgrade. The modified files are in the Configuration folder, organised in subfolders named after their original locations.

To restore any of the custom configurations, compare your modifications with the configuration changes made during the macOS upgrade and combine them when possible."

How do I find out which app it is and restore any changes I may have made?

I wouldn't worry about any of it unless things aren't working as you expect. I get stuff in that folder occasionally after updates and just ignore it. No need to restore the files I should think.

I had exactly the same files, i thought they were from an old Oracle install.

Deteded and can't see its affected anything.

I've deleted that folder after each successive Catalina update. I've never had a problem.

I trashed the folder and the Federation didn't collapse and galaxies didn't explode. To be blunt, it's not that important.

The correct answer to this is "it depends." If you had files at the root level of your disk and were using a version of macOS older than Catalina, the Catalina installer will move them to the Relocated Items folder. If you happen to be using the built in Apache web server and have made configuration changes to the server, the Catalina installer may revert your changes back to the default and put the previously modified configuration files in the Relocated Files folder.
If you've had a look in the folder and don't see anything that looks familiar, it's likely safe to delete the folder.

I have never used that built in Apache Server (don't even know what it is). I did trash the Relocated Items folder on my late 2012 Mac Mini, and so far, all is well.

That's just one example. The Catalina installer will move any folder that was at the root level of the disk, so if you had a folder full of files there, it'd get moved to Relocated Items.
