OK so 2 years ago I bought an iPhone 2G when they went to £160 in the UK. I put the phone on vodafone and was very happy - but then decided to get an O2 simplicity sim for the GPRS to work. Things have now come full circle and I'm thinking about switching to an iPhone simplicity contract which is £20 with unlimited texts and 300 minutes (a much, much better deal).

Thing is, my friend seems to have this idea in his head that if I try to activate this through iTunes it will flag up the IMEI on O2s computers and I'll be billed for the 18 months I said I'd sign up for....

What do you guys reckon?

The funny thing with iphone 2G's is that in order to activate it you gotta pick your data and minute plan thru itunes and in some cases it might renew or sign you for an agreement. I would double check with the particular provider and get details on how used 2G iphone activations work and if it will commit him to a 2 year agreement.
I'd suggest just JB and unlock it.

Yes but I have already bought the plan - and it's a pay monthly plan, not 12 month. I can't remember them writing down the IMEI when I bought the phone, and the only thing that scanned the box was for Carphone Warehouse.... Screw it - how can they know?

when the iphone 3G came out I'm pretty sure they scrapped the 'plan on signup' idea as it was freely promoted that you could 'givaway' your iphone to a friend, and assuming that any sane person would wipe the device before they gave it away the phone would have to be reactivated therfore must have got through without the need for a contract.

you should also be able to get it officially unlocked now either for free or for £15

obviously might not work if the phone hasn't been on a contract so try at your own risk.

post back if this does though

ps it was my biggest regret at the time that when they reduced the iphone 2G I didnt do exactly what you did :(
