Hi, I hope this topic doesn't come across as a request to "harass" (it isn't, honest! ;p) but in case not everyone is aware of it just yet, not all apps are updated yet for the new iPad pro's. This causes apps to be displayed with black bars on the sides. .g. an app could be the same size of 9.7" on the 11" despite the larger screen(space).

I'd just like to remind everyone to find out or notice which apps you use are not updated yet and then remind the dev's to also update it. Some will do it themselves but it never hurts to hurry it up a bit. And it's even shamefull some apps like companies like Netflix aren't updated yet.

I've sent a couple of tweets myself on Twitter, and a few e-mails. Got a responce from the Greedy Cave dev already.

What I sent to the dev's "@name Please update your apps for iPad Pro 11" (and 12.9" if you still haven't done it!). Thank you.".

The biggest problem with this is that developers have little incentive to upgrade. It won’t necessarily bring higher revenues - the new iPad Pros were just released.

The whole “please upgrade your app” issue is something I feel is a mistake by Apple - especially given how the 12.9” iPad Pros didn’t have a resolution or aspect ratio change, yet if I were a developer I need to update the app?

What might work is a one-off incentive to waive the 30% cut Apple takes so developers update their apps. That way the monetary incentive is substantial, although I’m not sure how Apple could implement that fairly. Maybe up to a fixed dollar limit regardless of app.

Well it depends on the app. The older the app the less money is a true incentive in terms of increased sales.
Most (if not all) newer apps should be good I guess, I read part of a big wall of text on safe area's and resolution etc. Can't find it anymore.

The 11" is the odd one out now in terms of resolution but 1. the 12.9" just isn't an option in terms of handling easily and 2. even that one has black bars still in some apps.
Twitch at least is updated, now Netflix quickly and ofcourse the more the merrier. Ofcourse all those apps still work fine but the more people I can annoy to update, the better. ;p

I would actually consider a number of old apps better than current apps, if not that they haven’t been updated, some not even for 64-bit. For me the biggest loss is Mr. Reader - an RSS app that was discontinued. I’d gladly pay for an updated version - I’m now using Reeder instead, which used to work perfectly on the old 12.9”, but now has weird UI issues, despite the same resolution.

The 12.9” is actually significantly more portable now, but that’s my opinion. The 11” will of course be more portable... but it does make me really want an updated iPad mini with the new design language - that would be the ultimate portable iPad.

Yes, I do get the safe area requirement, especially now that you need to trigger the multitasking by swiping up since Touch ID doesn’t exist anymore. It’s still an annoying requirement though, given the identical resolutions.

That reminds me to bug some dev's about 64 bit update aswell. ;p
Like games like TheBotSquad, made by a small indie dev studio called Ubisoft.
Tiny Thief aswell... shame...

Yes and no. If people release bad apps or bad support or don't update then they could get a bad name or fewer future sales. I do know some cases on the pc where certain dev's gotten a bad name due to it. And some dev's which turned a poor release into a long line of updates which in some cases certainly turned the game around.
How much the actual impact of said above is, I don't have a clue.

Yes I miss Tiny Thief too! Games are a hard proposition for developers to keep updated - they rarely make money beyond the initial sales if they don’t have some kind of freemium, subscription or episode model.

Apple should promote apps upgraded for the new displays in a special section of the App Store. That would be great incentive for developers to push out updates quickly, because it would increase sales/downloads. A big splash feature on the homepage with “Liquid Retina ready apps” is a no-brainer.
