Reminders not syncing on iOS 10 on iPad Air 2

I have an iPhone 7 Plus and an iPad Air 2 both running iOS 10.0.2. If I complete/clear reminders on the iPhone these reminders aren't syncing in the cloud and aren't cleared on the iPad. Other notifications across different apps on both phone and iPad don't seem to sync. I've tried rebooting etc. they're connected to the same router. It's really annoying, any advice?
