I would like to listen to my iTunes library remotely through my iPhone. Can the iPhone only control iTunes? Since I have much more music on my computer, it would be nice at times to put on some headphones and listen to the library through the phone when I'm doing things around the house (instead of blasting the computer speakers). I assume this is not possible. Correct?

i'm sure it's something that could happen in the future, but you're right. it isn't possible at the moment.

Well my phone isn't jailbroken so ORB won't work. Maybe it's time to join the jailbreaking crowd.

I don't understand your need for this feature. Can't you put enough of your music on your iPhone to get you through doing stuff around the house?

You know, there is an iPod somewhere inside of that iPhone of yours...... :)

There's an iPod on the iPhone? I had no idea! Thanks for the heads up. Let me explain it better to you. My iPhone is full of music but I have over 60GB of music on the computer. Instead of deleting and resyncing music all the time, I thought it would be nice to be able to play whatever I want instantly from my phone. Sometimes I want to listen to music thats not on my phone but on my computer. Make sense now? Surely it does.

plus it is ignorant to assume he only listens to music around the house. Just because it may be true for you doesn't mean it is for others. I too would like this feature. I play college football. we have many road trips that are in the 6-9 hour range. To access movies and music on my computer would be awesome.

Well the Apple Remote program currently works on Wifi, and the question was regarding that particular program. So I would assume that he only wants to listens to music around the house. Nothing ignorant about it, that was his question. You can't control itunes via Apple Remote App while away from your network.

You want Simplify media. It's coming on the App store soon. :)

I'm one of the luck beta testers and it's easily the best app on my phone. I loved the original version but this is so much better, and it works flawlessly over 3g. Hopefully it'll be in the store any day now so everyone can access it.

yeah fellow Beta tester here...this app really is incredible. I'd easily pay $10-$20 for it. Works amazingly over 3G.

It really is like having your entire iTunes library in the palm of your hand.

Also, for the OP:
There are some web apps that do this as well. One is "RemoteBuddy" and the other is "CrossFire". Crossfire requires you to be running a FireFly media server.

RemoteBuddy does other stuff too, but I have no need for it. Crossfire is free! Since they are both web apps, you can do other stuff while music is playing, which is nice (unlike SimplifyMedia).

Yes, there is. A real and true iPod! You can even put all sorts of music on it. And then you can listen to it. Can you imagine? And, if you have the 16 GB iPhone, you can put up to 9 full days, which is 216 hours, worth of music on it. You must have a really messy/cluttered house if you need access to more than 216 hours of music at any one time.

Even with your sarcastic response, I still can't comprehend why this feature would be needed as a part of Remote App. It's a remote control- it does what Apple says it would do- it controls iTunes remotely.

You know, you should try to read the whole thread instead of just one response, and maybe then you would understand what I was originally responding to. The OP wasn't talking about remote access to your iTunes library. He was talking about access to his music over wifi while being in his own wifi network. I'm very proud of you that you play college football. Head injuries suck though, eh?

Thank you. :) At least some people around here actually read the whole thread instead of just cherry picking one comment to blast and insult.

Until an App like remote or another does allow this...My fix is to create a play list that recycles music. For example you can create a list by Genre that plays the oldest played song or the most played songs or so many options. Once you sync back to your iTunes, it changes the play count of those songs that you listened to and replaces them with the next oldest. This way you have a constant new music library to listen too.

Just a suggestion.

dss and rizajj, thanks for the info on the App. Any clue as to a time frame for the release of this App? Looks like it's going to be a great App. Thanks again for letting me know there's something coming out that includes this feature.

Well, obviously you're in the minority. No one else in this post thought it was incomprehensible and I never said it needed to be part of the Remote App. Just wondered if this feature was possible. There is an App coming out addressing this feature and according to the two beta testers it's an incredible App. So, obviously there's wide interest in having the ability to have these controls from the iPhone. In case you skipped over their comments - "It really is like having your entire iTunes library in the palm of your hand" and "it's easily the best app on my phone". Wait, they must have really messy/cluttered houses since they are using this App. Just because you don't understand why people want to be able to do more with their phone doesn't mean they have messy/cluttered houses. That's what Apps are for. Some people find some useful while others will never use them. It's just something that I thought would be cool to see on Remote or another App and obviously I wasn't the only one.

I'm a fan of telekinesis (iPhone Remote). Google it. It works on any iPhone or iPod touch and you don't need to jailbreak.

Smart Playlist

Just a follow-up.

Here is the format I use for my regenerating play list. Remember that changes will take place every other sync. When you play current list it racks up the play count. Then you sync to iTunes and the play count gets recorded but syncs the current play that is available during that specific sync. The next sync the data will have been applied and changed your songs. It will not update the songs and change the songs in the same sync. Hope that makes sense. It works great for me and all my favorite Genres.

Good Luck

Um, your thread title is: "Remote App question - Possible to listen to Itunes library on iPhone?"

You originally asked if Remote App, specifically, had that functionality.

/interest...... waning.......lost.

Again, never said it "needed it" as you implied. The title simply asked if it was possible to use Remote to listen to iTunes. Then in the original post I go on to say, "I would like to listen to my iTunes library remotely through my iPhone". I didn't specify that it need to be with Remote. Just thought it would be a cool addition. But, as others specified, it's possible in other ways (Apps, third party software, etc.). Grow up. I was just asking a simple question and you have to argue over nothing. Surely you're not this childish. Notice, again, that no other poster had a problem with the question.
