For space reasons I need a one monitor solution to accommodate my ubuntu dev desktop and what is going to be a Mac family machine. The two options I'm considering are:
1. An iMac, which I'd use to remote desktop into ubuntu. Same Home network.
2. A macbook air or pro and a shared monitor.

I'd have a preference for 1., however I have no idea what the remote desktop experience will be like. I wouldn't want to have to deal with anything sluggish. My only experience with remote desktop is at work among W7 machines and the experience is great.

Thanks

Well remoting in using something like Teamviewer will certainly cause latency some latency. If you need to use two computers I think a MBP would be a better option, so you can share the monitor when needed.
