Remote hard disk

Hi Guys, I'd really appreciate some advise on how to set up a remote hard drive please.

Connected to my TV is a hard drive which is clearly visible on my wireless home network. My Mini is also on the same network. How can I add this remote hard drive to Finder?

I tried Finder - Go - Connect to Server, entered the ip address but the system reports a problem connecting. I also disabled the Firewall but the result was the same.

Any help will be most appreciated.

You'll need to know the protocol that the hard drive is using to communicate. Then you'll have to tell OSX which one, or to make sure it even supports it.

when you use Finder are you putting the suffix smb:// before the IP address?
 
Thanks for coming back. The hard drive is a Samsung D3 which works well when connected directly to the Mini with USB. The TV also recognises the hard drive when I connect directly to the TV with USB.

When I enter Connect to the server I've tried both smb://ip address and afp://ip address but both report that it's not possible to connect.

Are you sure it's a D3? I am not seeing anything about that model having WiFi.
 
Sorry, it doesn't, I was trying to access it via the TV which is connected by wireless.

Might be a good idea to see what the TV is using for WiFi communication. What does the TV spec say for 802.xx ? Is there a password and an SSID ? Can you see the TV using the " Wi-Fi Looking for Networks " part of the Mini ? Does the TV get an IP address from your router ? Is there a LAN option on the TV and can you try a LAN connection to the Mini ? That way you can see if the problem is a. the WiFi or b. the TV connection or c. the USB drive.
 
The TV spec states 802.11a/n and it's clearly connected to my network with the correct SSID and password. The signal is strong.

Looking for networks the Mini does not see the TV.

The TV receives an ip address from the Sky router and is visible from the router.

There is a LAN option with the TV but until now I've not used it. I could probably activate that method using some powerline adapters.

Having said that I have this afternoon installed PLEX media server software and solved the issue from the other direction. Now the hard drive is connected direct to the Mini and I can stream whatever I need to the TV.

Sounds like you figured out a process, but are you even sure your TV can act like a file server? I've never heard of a tv sharing files to a network. Generally the wifi is only for receiving files from the network and the USB is for reading files off a hard drive. Does the manual state anything about the TV sharing files?!?!
 
Yes, I think you're right, it seems only a one way street. My thanks to all of you for your inputs.
