Remote Library Quirks

Hi,

I tried to RTFM (search the forums), but I couldn't find anything on this subject, though it will undoubtedly have been covered in the past.

First, my setup. Everything is connected via an Airport Extreme. My "media server" is a Mac Mini. I store all of the content through iTunes on an external hard drive.

Everything worked just fine for the longest time. However, after restarting both machines for various reasons today, the AppleTV is only pulling up *some* of the TV shows, and they're out of order (seasons are all mixed up).

In iTunes, some of the files have an ! next to them (the kind that shows up if it usually can't find a file), but if I double click on the file and play it the episode plays just fine.

Anyone know what the deal is?

this is a known "issue" -- the fix is to remove the items from the itunes library and put them back in. this question doesnt seem to get asked a lot here, but it is asked often over at discussions.apple.com

Now my reaction: Holy crap... that's hardly a solution. As far as I understand, if I remove and re-add I'll lose all the information and have to re-enter it? I have hundreds of TV shows ripped from my DVD versions in there, fully categorized with descriptions and all... doing it over will take forever..

All the descriptions are stored with the file as a meta tag (at least that is true with audio files). If you remove the files and reimport it will just take a short while to reindex and you will be back to where you were before. All you will lose is the track played count and last played date. Just to make sure, backup your iTunes library file first and the xml file in the iTunes folder. That way you will at least be able to get back any lost information if things go tits up.

By "reindex" you mean move everything into TV shows / insert season and episode information?

Very frustrating bug though.. I have over 600 TV show episodes in iTunes and I'd say about half of them have the little ! next to them..

By reindex I mean it rereads the tag data.

Anyways, I should have done this first but I guess iTunes wasn't fully up to date. I updated and restarted, and the issue seems to be resolved.

Hopefully it won't start again...
