I had my brand new macbook, which is almost completely maxed out in features and cost me a crap load of money, in its incase neoprene sleeve. I threw the remote in next to the laptopand put it in my bag. I opened the bag up a couple of hours later and it seems as though the remote and the laptop almost melted the surface of each other a little bit. It is only cosmetic but im still really pissed because i have been finatic about keeping my laptop scratch free and stuff. Now my remote is completely messed up and there are little melt marks all over the top of it. The laptop was completely shut down, it wasnt even sleeping. It wasnt warm and hadnt been on all day. Has anyone had this problem and does anyone know what they will do if i go to the apple store geek bar. I have the apple care protection plan and everything. Thanks

Remote messed up laptop

not warm
guys i swear to god the thing was NOT warm. I dont think it literally melted. I think they sort of adhered to eachother and maybe there was a chemical reaction or something. I dont put my laptop to sleep, i just turn it off. Anyway, i have an appointment with a genius today. but do you guys think that they will take any action?

So i took it back to the store, and they said if i sent it in, they would put on new casing and give me a new remote. A little inconvenient seeing as im a prep school student with classes from 8 to 6 six days a week, but i hope to send it in thanksgiving break, and maybe be without it for a week during school, which will probably fine, ill just use my parents computer. I still want insights as to how this could have happened though, because i am completely bewildered.

It sounds like either you had some foreign substance leak into the bag (a petroleum caustic fluid?), you had it in a really hot place (trunk of a car?), or something along these lines. Plastic doesn't just suddenly deteriorate/fuse/"melt" together. Maybe you had something on your hands that was caustic to the plastics? I know the oil from my skin is really hard on metal/plastic, I have to wash my hands before using the computer, and wipe it down afterwards (I didn't on my first powerbook, and my palms ate holes in the aluminium, no joke...)
The only other (really unlikely but possible) possibility was the plastic not being completely cured/solidified (improper mix or some other such goofup.) This would be really odd though, as they don't just mix enough plastic for each notebook, it's done in bulk.
You learned a valuable lesson though. Don't put anything in the same bag as the notebook, at all. If it hadn't "melted", it could have easily scratched/damaged the notebook in other ways.

it was a cold cloudy day, my backpack was on my back or in a locker at all times. It was in a locker room, which i dont think is abnormally warm but ill check tommorow when i work out. it was either on my back, in one of two lockers, on my lap in the car, on the floor during class. It was always inside my backpack and inside the case. There was no leaking of any fluid. It rained a bit and i was walking in the rain, but the inside of my backpack was not wet. Thats pretty much it.

I'd get it replaced... other than trying to get it replaced, there's not much else to do... i'm sorry to hear that you have to go through all this...
