G'day,

"Out of the box", can you use "Screen Sharing" between an older Mac (ie MacPro5,1 running Sierra) and a M1 iMac (running - whatever it ships with)?

My father has finally agreed that yes, he does need a new computer (2008 iMac, with 1 dead backlight and a few other issues), but has now missed out on the chance to buy a discontinued iMac - so going to have to be a M1 machine (cos I can't be bothered tried to find a good 2nd hand machine on eBay).

One of the main issues we've had was the loss of Screen Sharing. It worked like a dream for a number of years, then just stopped.

Can anyone confirm - with experience - that you can use an Intel Mac to access an M1's screen - using either Apple's own software, or a solid freebie package?

Cheers and many thanks.

TeamViewer will always work and is free for personal use. I've used that for a number of years to provide support for my dad's Mac Mini and Lenovo laptop. Never tried Apple's Screen Sharing so I can't comment on that.

Not sure if it's a regional thing (Australia here)... but when my brother and I tried to instal Teamviewer earlier this year, it was going to cost $29/month.

Screen Sharing (Apple) was working beautifully - the only minor issue was having to get my dad to look up his IP address each time I remoted in, because he didn't have a static IP. Then I believe my brother did something... as it coincided with him visiting my parents... and it just stopped working. I have read some reports that Apple "turned it off", but then others say it still works...
