macOS Remote shutdown 10.9 Server from windows

Just switched to a Mac Mini server this week, and a potential issue was brought up today regarding power outages etc. The goal is for the server to be headless if possible, so we'd like to be able to run a script on the custodian's windows computer that would connect to the mac mini server, and tell it to shut down properly.

I originally thought of just having him vnc screen share to go in and shut it down, but figured having a script that gets ran would be easier.

The server and windows computer are on the same network scope so no IP tomfoolery exists.

Has anyone done this before, have ideas, or can point me in the right direction?

Better, and proper solution: buy a UPS that connects to the Mini and shuts it down automatically when necessary.

Look into Cygwin if you want to run a script. If you're doing this manually just use Putty and ssh to the machine then run your command.

We do have a UPS attached, thus how we can even shut it down, however there are two computers connected to the same UPS.

So Cygwin would allow me to make up some kind of script on windows that would connect to ssh and then run the command? I'll have to look into this.

What is the UPS? Model, manufacturer, and length of time it can run both computers.

If one of the computers, say the mini, can connect to the UPS and receive shutdown notices from the UPS, then it can tell the other computer to also shutdown. No custodian needed.

This is a general outline of an automated shutdown plan. A specific plan would require knowing what the other computer is, thus allowing the formulation of a means to shut it down (or for it to shutdown the mini). That's why I asked what the other computer is. If the other computer is precisely "the custodian's windows computer" identified in the first post, then please state that.

A Mini will run for quite a long time on a small, affordable UPS. I'd strongly consider buying a second.

Custodian's PC is custom built running Win 7 64bit

CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD 8 minutes However it currently is running an old HP Proliant as well which hasn't been shutdown quite yet but will be soon.

Alternatively an option would also be by connecting the UPS to the mini, have the custodian shut their computer off and let the UPS software shut the mini down?

open a ssh session and execute shutdown? It's not different from shutting down Linux or other Unix systems...
