This started as a specific question for Apple Music songs in a Playlist, but is now a more general one:

in iTunes on a Mac, how and where are Apple Music offline downloads stored?
As I see it, they should be stored in iTunes Media/Apple Music folder, but this is not always the case. Some downloads are, for some reason, stored in iTunes Media/Music. There are differences even in the same album (I download the first song of a Kraftwerk album and it's stored in /Music, while the second song is stored in /AppleMusic).
That's for various reasons not ok (libraries and tracks are all over the place), but mainly because "Remove download" only works with Apple Music songs that are stored in the Apple Music folder. So songs that are downloaded and (wrongly) stored in the /Music folder just remain there forever, eating up HD space even when you "remove" the downloads in iTunes...

To make matters even more confusing, sometimes, when I notice an Apple Music download is (accidentally?) stored in the /Music folder instead of the /AppleMusic folder, when I right click the song in iTunes and click "Show in Finder", the instant I click this, the song gets moved from /Music to /Apple Music. Not all the times though, sometimes it just shows it in the /Music folder without moving it...

Can anyone elaborate?

Sounds like a nightmare. Sorry I cannot answer the question, but that is one BIG reason why I only have Apple Music for streaming and never download offline copy. I once had to deal with the confusion when removed downloaded album from Apple Music, but I also have the same (purchased from iTunes Store) album on my library as well. Turns out it removed everything off my library. I had to go to iTunes Store and re download it all over again.

Well, it's weird... Maybe not a nightmare (first world problems), but still weird and unfortunate. I'd really like to have some "general" music library which combines streaming & physical records online & offline with flawless file-management, but it doesn't seem to exist. I like Apple, I like Apple Music and their "For You" playlists really work, but this keeps me from building my entire library on the iTunes platform.
Glad you answered though, still wondering if someone else has noticed the same problem; surely I can't be the only one?
