So I just traded in my Late 2020 M1 MacBook pro for a 2021 model. The "older" model was erased completely and surrendered to Apple in-store.

When I got home and set up the new laptop, I attempted to remove the old device from my iCloud device list. When I click remove, nothing happens and the device is still listed under my iCloud devices.

I tried to remove the device on my iPhone, my new mac, and even on iCloud.com. I'm given the following error on iCloud.com:

I've had no luck and have not been able to remove the device. Can't find any solution to this and even Apple themselves didn't know

I would try two things, one of which should solve the issue:

1) Attempt to remove the device from your iCloud account on appleid.apple.com. There is a good chance that it has already been removed from your account, but the removal has not propagated to your Apple devices. Given the error you posted, I expect this to be the case.

2) Change your password on appleid.apple.com and click the box that says "sign out all devices" (or something to that effect).

Removing the device from the Apple ID website should work. It may not immediately reflect on your devices, but if it is removed from the account using the Apple ID website, it should be permanently removed from the account.

I traded in my 13" M1 MacBook Pro with Apple. It stayed on my account for about 35 days (I tried to remove it several times in several ways but all unsuccessfully). Strange, but it finally disappeared.

So the device went away after a few days. I did try to remove it from appleid.apple.com and it disappeared, but when the page was refreshed it appeared again. I believe it was just not registering correctly that I removed it, as it was no longer in my Find My application, only in the iCloud devices list in the settings app, on iCloud.com, and appleid.apple.com

Thanks for the help, if anyone else has this issue, just give it a few days or try the suggestion above of resetting your password and signing out of all devices

Glad it worked itself out. Probably just a bug with iCloud.
