Remove windows partition from Desktop

Click on the desktop then click Finder > Preferences (command+,). Untick Hard disks

Somehow I'm betting he wants to keep the Macintosh HD on the desktop. He can either write a script(or Automator action) to unmount the drive each time, or if the Windows disk is NTFS, he can simply name it .Windows and it won't show up on the Mac Desktop anymore.

You can only partiton in 2 formats.

If your partiton is FAT32 you can read and write and therefore change the icon, name and modify the contents within OS X

If it's 'read only' then it must be in NTFS, so basically boot up windows. Select my computer, click on windows c drive (on the name) and rename to .windows

You cant have your cake and eat it :) It's one or the other.

But how would I set it so it does not show up on the desktop but the finder only.

By doing what I just posted? If its NTFS, rename it in windows to .somthing and it will not show up on mac desktop, but will do in finder.

You can use the convert command in windows to make a fat drive an NTFS drive. Just run in from the command line.

Start->run-> type cmd and press enter
convert /? to figure out how to work it
convert c: /<whatever options you should use>
i think it is

convert c: /FS:NTFS

You'll lose the ability to write to the drive then though. Although it begs the question... is it really bothering you that much?

Edit: Why are you bumping, did you try renaming the volume with a period as the first character? MacRumorUser gave you a solution - did you try it?

Great... I changed "Local C Drive" to ".windows" in My Computer in XP and it took it off my OS X desktop. Thanks :)

You can still write to it and view it normally if you want. It just won't appear on your desktop. The .notation is *NIX's way of hiding files. Anything with a . in front of it is hidden by default.

No when I rename it to .windows it says I am using an invalid character.

Renaming in windows or osx? It might throw an error in OSX but it shouldn't be an invalid character error. It's just a period like.

Try renaming in windows

You might have to use the magic command line. If you are uncomfortable with it then i guess you'll have to live with the icon on your desktop. As i said in an earlier reply, is it really that bad?

Yeah just change the icon to somthing more aesthetically pleasing on your desktop and learn to live with it would be the easiest solution.
