removing a disk image (help!)

hi everyone!

i have a new ibook g4, and it`s a great little machine but i am having a problem with disk images! i have absolutely no idea about computers, i was just following instructions given in the disk utility help manual which worked fine to a point, but suddenly when i really needed help, the instructions ran dry and i`m left with a really annoying problem!! anyone, if someone can help me out, and explain it to me simply, i would reeeeeally appreciate it!!

my problem:

i used disk utility to create a disk image so i could copy a dvd. i did that and copied my dvd, and afterwards i managed to delete the dvd files, but the disk image is still there!!! what i want to know is how to delete the disk image permanantly, i don`t want it there anymore! everytime i think i have deleted it, it seems to lurk back like an annoying relative at a wedding!

maybe my terminolgy is not right, so maybe i am even looking at the answer, but can`t see it because of the way it is written. right now my hard disk space is running low, before making the image i had 20 GB, i made two disk images, so now i have 4.7 GB in each, and only 10 GB for my hard disk! i really want my full 20 GB in one place again!!

i wasted about 5 hours yesterday trying to figure it out, but to no avail, so if you can help me, please do!!!

Make sure that you eject the disk image before you toss it into the trash -- which, now that I think of it, could be kind of a confusing explanation since both operations involve a visit to the trash can.

What I mean is, first eject the image so that it no longer shows up in the Finder or desktop. Then, drag the disk image file itself to the trash and empty it.

Yeah, disk images are funny in that they will open even from the trash if you try to access something inside them. Make sure you empty the trash.

Thanks for the advice, but it doesn`t work!!

I ejected the disk image so it wasn`t on the desktop or finder, then i dragged the disk image file from the list in the disk utility screen, and put it in the trash. the file went into the trash and dissapeared from the disk utility list, but when i tried to empty the trash i got a message saying the trash was already empty!!

i used `open disk image` from the file menu in disk utility, and found the disk image still lurking on my computer! so i repeated the step, and i know it definately went into the trash, because i get the trash munching sound, and the disk image name dissapears from the disk utility list. but this time, before emptying trash, i opened up the trash window and sure enough, there were no files in there!

so it seems this method removes the disk image name from the disk utility list, but still doesn`t remove it from the computer!!

i used spotlight to search for the actual disk image files themselves, but they don`t show up anywhere! i can`t find where the two actual images are held, but i know they are still there, because my hd memory reads 10GB so there is still 4.7gb being held up in each!

i`m not abig computer person so sorry if my descriptions and terminology is a bit off. once again, i really appreciate any help anyone can give me!
