iPod Removing black borders using handbrake?

I just started using handbrake to add my DVD collection to itunes. My problem is that some widescreen movies seem to have a large black border on the top and the bottom. I can't seem to get rid of them. Trying to watch movies on the iPhone and ipod touch is small enough, but the borders makes it even smaller. The settings I am using is Apple Universal and auto crop. Any help?

They're not borders, they're there because the aspect ratio of the screen is not as wide as that of the film.

Yeah, if you're using auto-crop, then any black bars you see on the iPhone should be because I don't think there are any films that fit the iPhone's screen. You'll either get bars on the top and bottom or on the sides, and you'll need to manually zoom in the video to fill the screen.

Are you seeing black borders on just the top and bottom, or are you seeing black borders on the sides as well? If you're seeing black borders on the sides as well as the top and bottom, it indicates that the DVD you're ripping is non-anamorphic. If you only see them on the top and bottom, you can tap the video while it's playing on your iPhone or iPod Touch, then tap the button in the top-right to zoom which will remove the borders but chop off the sides of the video.

So, in the future if all I care about is the media inside my itunes library (don't watch my dvds anymore since I found the joys of ATV and various ipods), then should I buy full screen DVDs? Man, I never thought I'd say that.

Manually adjust the resolution to 480x320. Then if there's going to be black borders, crop as necessary or if you don't want to crop too much, then as a last resort stretch or squash the video slightly. If it's only by a little bit, you shouldn't really notice slight squashing unless you play it side by side. The most important part though is getting the resolution to exactly 480x320 with no border.

I don't know how much longer they are gonna make full-screen DVDs but that is just asinine. When you watch fullscreen DVDs on widescreen TVs (the direction all TVs are heading), they will have black "borders" on the sides.

If widescreen movies really bother you, you can doubletap the iPhone's screen in a movie and it will zoom. If the film is aspect ratio is 1:85, then it will mostly likely get rid of the "borders". But if the film is 2:35, then it will get rid of half the "borders" (those movies are 'super' widecreen).
