Is there a way to remove the "Windows Vista (TM) Beta 2 Evaluation Copy. Build 5384" text from the bottom right of the desktop?

It's usually a registry key

HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\PaintDesktopVersion set it to 0 to disable.

Works for XP and 2K IIRC, but could work on Vista.

It seem you can remove it with a resource editor, google for reshack and vista, but it seems that introduces some instabilities so be really careful!

Did you restart the system after editing the registry?

That particular key is only accessed by winlogon.dll
