Is there a way to rename and external hard-drive in Disk Utilities *without* having to re-format the entire drive?

I use CCC to backup my Mac, and I like to have the external drive labeled with the current backup date (e.g. MB_backup_2019-05-17), so it keeps changing.

I am using FileVault.

And I am currently running Mountain Lion - yeah, I know! - on this older Mac.

Thanks.

You can't change the name doing a get info in the finder and changing the name there? Don't know if FileVault would restrict this ....

I booted my mac from my internal HDD, and then plugegd in my external backup drive, and went into Finder, and sure enough, I was able to right-click on the external drive and rename it there.

Who wouldathunk?!

On my Retina, when I want to do that, I always go into Disk Utility and do a similar action there. But apparently you cannot rename a drive in Mountain Lion's Disk Utility app like you can in Sierra.

Either way, that solves my problem, so thanks!! :apple::apple::apple:
