I travel quite frequently and would like to be able to access my emails (and more, if possible) without having to lug my Mac and find a WiFi hotspot and/or an internet cafe. iPhone seems like the right option. My problem - I seldom use a phone otherwise. My current mobile phone is on a pay-as-you go basis because I don't use the phone much.

SO, I'd like to be able to rent an iPhone when I'm likely to need to be connected but I don't want to buy one because it's just more than I need on a daily basis. I'm based in the UK so a UK provider is ideal (necessary?). Max rental period - 1 month, sometimes only a week or less at a time.

Can this be done? If not, some enterprising entrepreneur should do so.

If you will have access to wifi most of the time, then just get an iPod Touch. I'm pretty sure you can get an iPhone on pay as you go in the UK. However, renting one probably wouldn't be possible.
