Renting Movies for Vacation

I'm about to leave for vacation and I'm renting some movies for the long car trip. Am I able to download the movie on my Macbook and transfer the movie over to my iPad, allowing me to watch the movie on my laptop while another person watches the same movie on the iPad? I've searched MRoogle for an answer and I've come up with "If you want to transfer the rental from one device to another, you have to connect both devices to iTunes and transfer it from one device onto another", but I haven't found a direct answer that says the movie doesn't stay on the Macbook.

I could be wrong but I believe the intent with renting is for one device at a time so it cannot be shared and watched by both of you on different devices.

You are correct--tried to put it on both wife's and my iPhone last summer for family trip. Once you sync it to one device, it's gone from the computer.

EDIT: As an afterthought, has anyone tried watching a movie on one device and transferring it back to the computer to watch it within the 24 hour period?
