If you rent or buy a movie, and you have an iPhone and an iPad, can you synch the movies to both the iPhone and iPad, or is it one or the other?

I'm surprised to read that. I could swear when I rented a movie this past weekend on my Apple TV that I got this new message that said something like "this movie can only be viewed on your Apple TV."
Was thinking the same thing.... If you d/l on your computer, laptop or iPad then you can transfer to ATV. But if you rent on ATV no luck.
Wish Apple would change this.
